Brad's 290 DAS Upgrade

Finally! I am able to start my "dream" tank!

I went from a 30g to 55g to 115g to 150g....then came a move across the metroplex. I saved a piece of almost everything in my tank, along with a couple fish. Unfortunately, 90% of the livestock died.

I asked for help taking care of what little I had left, and fortunately a member on DFWmas came through for me (Thanks Peter!).

I eventually snagged a very nice 65g tank from this forum and started to slowly build the livestock back up.

After about a year, the wife, baby and I were in a good position to start the permanent tank . I looked around the forums and Craigslist, even purchased a 150g (wife vetoed on grounds of it was "too small" ). SO, I finally gave in and decided to go all in on having the permanent tank built.

My 115g was a DAS and I loved the workmanship and woodwork on the stand, so I had them build the tank. I wanted at least a 8ft long tank, and they certainly came through. I ended up going with their DECO 280 and saved a bit of money vs the complete custom I had in mind.

Halfway through the build, DAS called and asked if I minded an extra 2" on the length (bringing tank to 98")....of course not!! Hence the final 290g capacity.

About 6 weeks after the start of the build, DAS delivered the tank.

Here is the 65g which has served me well the last year and will be for sale after the 290g is up and running.

Yes, the wall behind is empty. I had to paint before the tank was delivered, you can see where I got tired and stopped to the left of the fireplace lol.

Sand started! I purchased 280lbs of sand and around 140lbs of rock from Marco Rocks. Very impressed with the price and the quality. Would definitely recommend them.

The sump was a home built from a DFWmas member who gave me an awesome price on it...it had a crack the needed to be repaired, no problem!

BrianG sold me a very nice glass RO storage tank.

As far as the other equipment, so far I have:

- 3x Jebao WP-60's (will buy two more, 4 operating, one for standby)
- 12,000L Jebao DC Return pump
- Apex Jr.
- Reef Octopus 5000int skimmer

I'm still trying to figure out the light configuration. I'd like a mix of T5's and LED's. The clearance in the DAS canopy is pretty slim, so I think I may just have to do 2x 48" T5/LED fixtures. The other option would be 5 LED fixtures arranged in a line in the middle of the canopy, flanked by long 54w or 80w T5's on the front and back of the canopy.

Half of the rock is in, waiting to be rockscaped (thinking "pegging" will be the way I go). All the sand (minus live sand from current tank) is in...280lbs.

Beast! Nice long tank. No tang police for you! lol
Keep the updates coming, can't wait to see the progress of this one!

Thanks Mike!

Haha, well there's already a question I have for the police: I'd love to have a Vlamingii or Unicorn Tang, but I'm worried I may not have the space for one. Thoughts?

Tentative livestock list so far:

Atlantic Blue Tang
Powder Blue Tang
Yellow Tang x 3
Clown Tang
Naso Tang
Harlequin Tuskfish
Flame Angel
Potter's Angel
Blue/Green Chromis x 10
Yellow Eyed Kole Tang
Filefish
Bangaii Cardinal x 6
Cleaner Wrasse
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
Mystery Wrasse
Starry Blenny
Red/Green Mandarin x 2
Orchid Dottyback
Copperband Butterfly
Clownfish x 2
Diamondhead Goby

The tang list will grow shorter, I'll probably skip the Kole and the Clown Tangs, maybe...

Finally have time to get back into the hobby and more specifically into the build.

The bad news: I was pegging my rock work and mishandled the drill right into the front center pane of glass. The bit scratched a 1.5" line. I tried to lessen the mark with cerium oxide and the stupid drill that made the scratch, but to no avail. So my unfilled, brand new tank has its first major scratch

After a brief bout of depression, I figured there was nothing more I could do but fill the tank and get over it, so I started filling. So far there's about 90 gallons in the system, so only 260 gallons to go!

Man, that sucks....sorry to hear. Hopefully it won't be all that noticeable when it's filled. (Fingers crossed).

I think I've got the lighting plan down: 5x 165w LED fixtures with 8x 54w T5 bulbs flanking them. I'm planning on building a fixture pretty close to the one below, then building an aluminum frame or just the legs to support it (bottom pic).

Tank is finally filled and running. Organization still to go, but I wanted to start curing the rock in the tank. Hopefully coral and fish will go in late Dec or early Jan.

Apex is set up so I can monitor from the road, but I can't get the darn email alert function to work. Anyone have any experience with setting up an @live.com account (Hotmail)?

Still have the lights and light mounts to buy/build.

So recently my email alerts stopped working. They were working for almost 3 years then one day they stopped. I haven't been able to figure out what's going on. But this weekend I was going to try and setup a new email account as I heard some ISPs block some provides. Also the tank on the right is that for ATO? If so how is it getting filled up looks like a pretty tight space to fill it up.

Sent from pay phone in the airport.
