what are you using, and how happy are you with it? Also, is there a rule of thumb on watts per gallon? I plan on having these running off a controller, but dont want to have to worry about throwing current in the tank or outright failing.

Ebo Jager / Eheim Jager. 3w/gal is the standard.

here is there tip of the day on heaters

My tips. Don't go for the cheapest thing made. In general... (read reviews and follow advise)... you get what you pay for.

Use a controller. I've got this hooked up to my nano: http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=22586

For $32 bucks there's no reason NOT to. That's the cheapest insurance you can get!

I have one in my sump. It protects me, that's the reason I have it.

I just read what I wrote... whoops..

I meant to ask what is everyone doing for a grounding probe? Are these a diy part or do you buy it?

I would buy it they are pretty inexpensive

I bought it. I used to have one in the tank and one in the sump, but now it is just one in the sump.

I'm out of town now but hopefully watching this thread will remind me to check what I just bought. I had to replace my stealth heaters since they were recalled. My new heaters have a safety to cut off if they are not submerged. My topoff float valve stuck and one of my two heaters was exposed this spring when the heaters were on. The submerged heater was on and the exposed heater was off. Pretty beat feature.

Nice feature. Here's an article I came across that explains a lot about heaters:

Not sure if this has been posted before... it's from 2008, but I thought it was educational and worth a read.
