150 watt hqi and 250 watt

If you own a fixture that is made for a 250 hqi bulb, can you put 150 watt bulb instead if you don't want it that bright. I not sure if that is possible. I would assume yes, my table lamp does not care what watt bulb is in it but it does not have a ballast also.

Not interchangable. And yes your table lamp does care, if you draw to much power you can start a fire.

Plus I am pretty sure the 150W bulb is smaller then the 250. but can't remember for sure.

The bulb is smaller?

The ballast will still put out 250w, but the bulb can only handle 150w.

The bulbs are different sizes and even if they were the same size, the contacts are different on the ends of the bulbs.
