Most people recommend not running the skimmer until the tank has cycled. I took a slightly different approach because I had a brand new skimmer and it can take a skimmer a few weeks to "break in" and really start working. What I did was run the skimmer but let the drain line from the collection cup just dump back into the sump. This way I wasn't removing anything from the tank but still got past the "break in" period for the skimmer by the time the tank had cycled.
