Skimmer Advice

My DAS skimmer pump died on me yesterday and a new one is $120 so I figured I might as well just upgrade! I have a newly setup 60g (36x20x20) with a 20L sump. Skimmer section is 12x8-8.5. I am considering the following and was wondering if anyone had any opinions or experiences. There are obviously 2 price ranges here so keep that in mind when ordering. I understand a skimmer is important and dont want to go cheap but dont want to spend $300 if its not necessary.

I have this one on my 32"x24"x14" tank with a 20 gallon sump and it works great. I really like the reef octopus skimmers.

Reef octopus is always a good choice

For my 75g, i got a vertex in-100 and am very happy with it. The in-80 might be a better choice for your size, but definitely worth considering!

If you like your current skimmer, I have a DAS pump you can have for $40 or trade for a hi-end zoa/paly. lmk

**edited: Oh....thats not a set price. [smilie=lol.gif]

I have a bubble magus nac8 and it is a great skimmer for the money. I also have an iTech 200 and the nac8 performs as well as the iTech.

I would look at jns (mojo on r2r gives it rave reviews he is the skimmer guinea pig on r2r he tests all the new skimmers) I recommend vertex alpha and also itech skimmers.

Personally I would just replace the pump my old das ex1 ran just as good as my alpha skimmer but I ran it where the overflow fed right into my skimmer

I have the Reef Octopus 6" pinwheel on my 120 and I feel like I need something with a more powerful pump and air draw. When I had it on my 75 it worked great.

But whether it was on the 75, or currently the 120, I have never been a fan of the pump. Seems pretty touchy on restart.

it is really the pump that makes the itech the tunze hydrofoamer. His skimmers are just a plain cone skimmer but what set them apart was that they could fully dissemble in less than two min so you can clean them pretty easily.

I could care less about disassemble as long as they are somewhat cleanable. Most of these skimmers are clones of each other, but various sizes. The major differences are the pumps and impellers.

On skimmers with bubble plates you want them to fully disassemble as the plates get clogged with sponges or gunk and you want to take it apart to clean the holes. If the don't dissasemble you spend 20 - 30 min cleaning all the holes

I agree pumps make a difference between an ok skimmer and great skimmer. Former sicce owner here

Do you feel positive about sicce pumps on skimmers?

I don't know about Pampee but I think the sicce sux. I have had nothing but issues with these restarting to the point of just selling a relatively new skimmer with a pair of sicce's. They do ok with an updated pin wheel but I could not tolerate the restart issues.

Cheers,

The new skimmer pumps are great. I replaced the two 2500 with two psk1000's about a year ago and have not had a restart problem once with them. The 2500 was terrible, that is because is was not designed by sicce to be used as such(skimmer/pinwheel). The psk600 and psk1000 were.

Said the man that bought that skimmer from me, I did warn ya about those 2500's. [smilie=lol.gif] Glad they came out with newer pump's, those were not available back then.
