Plate coral dying? - Lps

[The oldest of my 3 plate corals has lost tissue at the center and the underlying skeleton is visible for a least a centimeter. Is this a terminal condition? Is there anyway to frag and salvage one of these when the "mouth" is involved??]

[Have you ascertained why this event has happened? For example, was it submerged in sand accidentally, or had sand on top of it? That happened to mine, and it never did recover. It didn't die either, but it looks miserable. However, on the edge where it was pretty much dead, there are two little heads growing that are about 3/8" wide, each.
