I’m on the verge of ordering several lbs of LR for my new tank. I would like to know who to stay away from and who is recommend, for there are several online vendors to pick from. They all say that they are the best!! Also include what type of rock was ordered…and if you have pics, that would be great!! So if you have ever ordered any amount of live rock please let us hear about it

I'm ordering on monday or tuesday and still dont know where. I will be getting about 120lbs for my 125g tank. Its a smaller amount than recommanded but thats because you can see the tank from both long sides so i cant stack the rock on the glass.. Has anyone every heard of this place or have any info on the type of rock.

I believe the graphic that Marc posted roughly translates to "Hello? Anyone out there? Could someone please help this nice person out with their question? Tap-Tap... Hello? Is this thing on?"

Unfortunately, I can't help much with your actual question, as the last time I bought any quantity of live rock was 5+ years ago... Hopefully someone will come along and see this threa that HAS purchased rock more recently and be able to offer some advice...

Right. I usually get LR from others in the club, typically if I'm buying their setup. I've never purchased LR online.

TBS liverock is dense, and contains many hitchhikers including unwanted mantis shrimp. If you plan to buy quite a bit, try talking to the various LFS in the area and see what kind of deal they'll offer you.

Ok, I'll help

HIrocks offers cheap base rock for ~$1.50 / pound shipped. I don't know about the quality because I havn't recieved any yet. http://www.hirocks.com

IntMarine offeres 'cured' and 'uncured' live rock that he can pick sizes on w/ free 'shipping' for $3 pound. Overnight only for 100pounds or more. The rock had TONS of macro algae and many hitchhikers... unfortunatly, most of the hitchhikers were dead. This would be a much better 'deal' if the customer service didn't suck so bad. I had to beg for a tracking number, bed to find out when it shipped, it wasn't cured and the shipping policy was misleading. http://www.intmarine.com

Dr Mac's corals - Drop shipped rock from Tonga. $2.50 pound / shipped. I was pleased w/ the rocks and quality. Customer service was super awesome!! They made sure I was happy during the order and even afterwards! http://www.pacificeastaquaculture.com

The last LR that I purchased was from http://www.floridaliverock.com/ they gathered the rock on a Tue and was in my tank that Thurs. Also had interesting hitch hikers none really bad however….

Ok on this same subject, is it better to buy rock for a new system at a LFS or from a online store? WHat is the difference in Fji and Walt Smith premium rock? do any of the sponsors sell live rock? does it matter how much rock you have ? I have several diffrent sized tanks to pick from to start my saltwater tank. But I am not sure if I want one pound of live rock to every gallon of water in the tank. Will all the rock look purple or green? I like the Featherduster but I am so new I don't know how I want to setup my tank. Thanks in advance for all the great info I know I will get from "the experts" . Breezy

I think you should buy if from an online vendor that will ship air freight, you pick it up at one of the airports at a freight terminal. It will save you a bunch of money over FedEx and you will get it in your tank quicker. Some places do not want to deal with you that way and insist on shipping it FedEx. If the tank is a brand new, get uncured rock right out of the ocean you will get more diversity that way. If the tank has been set up for awhile and you are just adding some additional rock make sure you get cured rock. And in this case I think it is almost better to buy from a local store and make sure it is cured to prevent getting die off during long shipping and possible starting a cycle in a set up tank.

I remember one of the sponsers trying to sell rock because of a store opening later on or something like that. Might be able to bargin on that much rock.

If you go to the LFS(local fish store) and tell them you are buying quite a bit of LR (live rock), you may get a better price.

You do want 1 to 1.5lbs of LR per gallon of water.
