I have some GSP growing on the base of my toadstool. Is this something I should worry about and peel off or can I leave it?

I would peel it off completely. It will overrun and kill the toadstool by limiting the amount of light it gets. The toadstool is a photosynthetic, so limiting the amount of light even slowly over time will result in the deterioration of it.
