Current and reef tanks - Current?

[How much current is needed in a well rounded reef tank?

right now for a 150gallon tank I just have besides my 2 locline returns, a submerged Rio 1400 connected to a SCWD device to provide some alternating current.

Any comments / thoughts on my setup?]

[Hi Largo,

What is your return pump rated at, including head pressure? Since you said loclines, I'm guessing you have a sump. With a sump, tank turnover rate is 10 times an hour. But that isn't enough current for a reef, especially if you love SPS corals.

My 29g has movement of 31 times an hour. My 55g is also 31 times per hour.

29g: Mag 5 return, Mag 5 closed loop with SCWD, MaxiJet 1200 for skimmer, Maxijet 600.
55g: Mag 9.5 return, Tunze Turbelle, 2 Azoo powerheads.]

[Depends on the corals you have. Most soft corals 5x to 10x is fine. For SPS, 10X is probably a bare minimum. I have about 20x volume turnover on my tank and IMO its just approaching a reasonable level. But there are so many factors like coral growth patern, type of flow, where the flow is pointed, etc.]
