Couple of Newbie ?'s

Will a heater cause any damage just laying in the water. For example, will it melt any plastic that it comes in contact with?

Is it ok to put a calicum reactor in my sump?

+1 on Matt's answers.

I'd also add, given you say you're a newbie, are you planning on setting up your calcium reactor already? I was just going to suggest holding off on doing that until you have a handle on your tank's stability. If it's a new tank, take a few weeks to understand your tank's calcium demand. You might find that just doing manual dosing of calcium and alkalinity supplements (2-part) is good enough.

Good luck!

Jared,

I place all of my heaters inside PVC. This is how...

For the Jager heaters, 1 1/4" pvc (I think) is the right size. Cut the PVC to length of the heater and then drill it full of holes. Now put the heater in the pvc and lay it down in the bottom of the sump or where ever. The pvc keeps the heater off of the bottom glass and protects it from getting broken. Some heaters have a tendency to float and the pvc stops this also.
