Zebra eel substrate question

I am setting up a temporary tank for about 4 months while my house is finished. I wanted to do bare bottom to make it easier and cheaper. I have read that they need at least a 2" sand bottom, but also read where people keep eels in a BB tank. Does anyone have any experience/opinions?

Thanks, Brian

My very large zebra lived in a 250 with a good sand bottom and lots of rock work. He did not bury himself but enjoyed staying behind and under the rocks. I would think they would be stressed without a lot of hiding places and would need at least a little sand on the bottom so he felt secure.

Bare bottom is fine for your temporary tank. We once kept our zebra moray for several months during a move in a huge bucket with live rock, skimmer, and a cover to stop him from jumping. Give him somewhere to hide though.
