What to use to test water? - Like ph, salinity, ammonia, etc

[IME what you use to test your water is one of the "you get what you pay for" items in this hobby.

For salinity/specific gravity, IMO you should get a refractometer.

For the nitrogen cycle (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate) I have always used Fas/Sea Test.

For pH, a meter is best, pinpoint is almost always recommended but there are many had held to choose from.

For Alkalinity and Calcium, Salfert.

That's just my two cents. I am sure others will chime in.]

[Since most pH test kits colors are a greenish blue color and about 1/3 of the male population is green /reed color blind I use a hand held hanna pH meter with temp diplay.

They are alot closer to being correct then the test kits but what can I say I could not tell the difference anyway.. :eyebrows:

[I agree with SALT. Go with Salifert and get a PH Meter. You'll save the money purchasing a PH meter instead of buying all of those test when you first start out. If I new this when I first started out, man, I could have saved at least a few hundred dollars. And the PH Meter is very accurate.
