Two Holes in back of Tank

Just got this set up and we found out the hard way that there were two holes in the back of the inside of the tank that sucked in my anemone almost killing it. Its a JBJ 20 gal Nano RL tank. One hole is located at the bottom left of the filtration box chamber, and the other on the bottom right going into the pump chamber.
Does anyone have information on the purpose of these holes?

I believe they are emergency holes in case the overflow becomes clogged or you forget to top off the tank and the water gets below the overflow.

I had a JBJ years ago and the holes in the back we a lot smaller!
Try not to get the stand wet either. It can start to swell.
