Top for 29 gallon

I bought a top for my 29 gallon tank i have a 2 foot coralife compact fixture on it. And the glass broke i guess it cant hold the weight of it. I was just wondering what you suggest i do. IM guessing i will need to make one strong enough. BUt how should i make it? and should i use glass or plexi glass? WEre should i get it?
 
I have a coralife fixture on my daughters 20 long and run open top since the fixture is 6 inches short I got some box tubing ( aluminum ) from home depot and run it in the tracks that the lid would sit on and they do well . The other option is get a glass lid made at a glass shop out of high strength 3/16 glass and use that . Hope it helps
 
Was the original glass something that came with the aquarium? Do you actually need it?

1/4" tempered glass or 1/4" acrylic should be a safe bet.
