setting up a skimmer?????

Ihave a wet/dry and asealife skimmer I'm trying to set up. Can someone help? Everything seams easy, but it has a peice of white piping and a 90deg pvc fitting on the end. What does it do?

Can you post a pic...I believe the white pipe should be adjustable so tat you can adjust the water level in the skimmer body for wet or dry foam.
