Rotifer Culture Help Needed

Anyone here ever culture rotifers I could call real fast. If so PM me
I just got a bag of live rotifers in and the instructions and posts I am reading are confusing

Thanks

Did you get it figured out? They are pretty darn tough so it's hard to go wrong as long as they have food and decent water.

Are they resting cysts or live?

If live add them to a 2 L and turn the water green with phyto. Add a piece of rigid tubing with a slow bubble rate and just be sure to keep giving them phyto daily. They really are super easy to culture!

TJay called me lastnight but Im not sure how helpful I was. He has a live culture/ His directions said to used microwaved tank water which was something I have never done.

well we colored the water light green
did not seem to lighten all day but there are specs in the water column

I have a question on this too. Obviously you have to add water with the phyto, how do you make room? Do you siphon off water with a rotifer screen in place? But then how do you get the rotifers back in the 2L bottle with that narrow opening?

I don't know if this will help, but here is a link that I had saved.

I always just pour some of the water through the roti screen and then use a large funnel and turkey baster to get the rotifers back in. Just takes one or two squirts of water to get them off the screen. Another way is to refill with phyto when you harvest rofiters to feed the babies. Just pour some though the screen into the sink (or whatever), feed the babies the rotis, and refill the bottle with phyto. It only takes like a cup to feed the babies once your roti culture is dense.

Where exactly did you order your rotifers for culture from? I found this site but want to make sure it is the best option. http://www.ashbyaquatics.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=86

Great, thanks. I am going to try to get a hold of some phyto from a member, hopefully, and order rotifers to stert culturing next week. I want to be prepared for your next brood. Seems liek you are having them every 2 weeks now!

Back when I was in San Diego, I used www.rotifer.com for some live rofifers and was very satisfied with thier service. A little more expensive for live but I needed them ASAP.

well it looks like I may have enough to get me through this brood
I am going to try and keep some going and feed my tanks with them but no more fry after this go.
We are going to start supplying them to club members who want to give reidi fry a go.

We are not out of the woods by a long shot as I have heard of massive die offs in 6 week old fry
My reading tells me the bigest concern is getting over confident and not keeping up with major water changes
I aslo understand the faster you can get them onto freeze dryed or frozen foods the better their chances since even enriched bbs will not keep 3/4 inch and bigger fry alive. Just not enough nutritional value.

I can also say for those considering this. You never feel your feeding enough rotifers because, well you just cant see them. So fight the urge to over feed as it takes up to 36 hours for a culture to regenerate after hitting a bottle for feeding.

I wanted to add. Watch your ammonia levels even more closely when you start feeding frozen, or trying frozen. Sometimes it goes up quickly.
