RO/DI Unit

I have a 5 stage ro/di that I cannot find/remember where I ordered it from. I went to make water last night and I am only getting 74 out instead of 0-2. How do I know which filter needs to be replaced? Is it going to be more than one or just one specifically? I have only had the unit for about a year but I don't use it all that often. It looks alot like Portable 5STAGE Reverse Osmosis Ro Di Radiation Removal | eBay but that is not the one I ordered but its still a 50 gallon per day portable unit.

Do I not have 5 different membranes or is that specific to one of them? Also, does the membrane has a model/serial number on it so I can buy the correct one?

I'm dont' know how yours is exactly setup but the link below is for the normal filter replacement for a 5 stage unit. This does not include a new membrane. The filters should be replaced every 6 months to a year depending on use. The membrane should last several years as long as it stays wet.

Since yours is portable, have you dropped it or banged it around recently. Just thinking maybe it could have shaken something loose or one of the filters/membrane has come unseated. Let it make around 4 or 5 gallons and then test the water and see what you get. If not fixed, unscrew each filter and make sure the filter inside is seated correctly. Also make a note of what kind of filter is in each housing. If it is still reading 70, then I would order a filter replacement like I linked. Several of the sponsors sell kits. Make sure you order the same type of filters that are currently on it if you aren't planning on changing anything. If you replace all the filters and then you are still getting a high tds reading then the membrane will need to be replaced.

When was the last time you used it? The number you saw, how did you measure it precisely? You may simply be seeing TDS creep, or your container may be dirty and throwing off the number.

The membrane is on the top, usually inside a white housing. The prefilters beneath should be changed every six months, but they don't affect TDS readings; they protect the membrane from chlorine damage. Finally, the DI stage (usually the fifth/final stage) removes the LAST of the TDS that the membrane didn't take out.

Pictures and more details would be great before you spend any money.

Before last night, It had been just over a week since I used it. I try and use it once a week, even if its just a little bit of water. The TDS meter is showing ~340 in and about 74 out. The in is plugged in between the faucet and the unit. The out is after the last filter and before the end of the hose into my container. It use to read between 1-3 and when I tried using it last night, it jumpped above 70. I will take some pictures when I get home.

Did you measure it after it had been running for at least 2 minutes?

No, I didn't wait two minutes before measuring it. I normally just measure it when I turn it on. I am adding some pictures to see if that helps at all. Am I going to need to replace everything or just the membrane for a specific part of the filter?

I found who I ordered the unit from. I gotta figure out which things I need to order. The membrane says its lasts 2-3 years and I have only been using it about 6 months or so.

It says it can be used for aquariums:

1. You don't have tds meter so you don't know if your filters are bad you need to know the tds coming incoming the filter and out of the filter

2. You have no pressure gauge of you don't have enough psi then you are not getting a good ratio of good to bad water

3. Your filter containers are not clear if you have high tds water you can see the sediment filter turn brown.

If you want to try to make it work you will need a dual inline tds meter and a inline pressure gauge ....

I religiously change my filters every 6 months no matter what my tds meter says

I have a tds meter. its plugged in on the inbound side of the unit and then on the outbound side. I just didn't take a picture of it cause I had to disconnect it to take the pictures.

If 74 is out on tds meters then I would think all your filters need to be replaced.

I just put everything back together and waiting the 5-10 minutes to see what it drops down to. I just checked and it was recording 8 out. I think it got better after I flushed it.

Let us know what you end up doing. Setting your system up like that will help make the DI resin last longer. But you do need to change your carbon and sediment filters now since they are what allow your membrane to last.
