Plate coral center died

I have a plate coral where the center died. I earnestly fed the outside ring of tissue in hopes it would stay alive. To my amazement the outside ring is OK. Now it has been four months and hair algae has set in on the vacant center.

What do I do now? I have tried to remove the algae but it always comes back. One of the LFS told me not to expose these plate corals to the air so I haven't.

It was so pretty when it was whole.

I dunno, you may try epoxy to give it a smooth surface. May make it easier to keep clear and it may eventually grow back over it.

I have used the dremel tool on the center to smooth it out and try to get rid of the algae. I would say it looks bleak now.

Don't give up on those plate corals. Even when they die down to just a skeleton leave it in the tank and a lot of times you'll see a bunch of baby plates sprout up out of nowhere.
