This is Grover. "He" (don't know for sure yet) is an Abdopus aculeatus aka "Bi-Pedal" Octopus. As of yesterday he is the new occupant of a 60 gallon cube set up across the room from Kalypso. Settled right in and took to foraging through the rocks right away. He hasn't touched the 3 peppermint shrimps but he eats silversides. Yay!

He is sharing the tank with a yellow Coris wrasse and a blue-spotted rabbitfish. This particular kind of octopus has been successfully kept peacefully with seahorses and ribbon eels, of all things. I kept one before at the clinic I worked at and it never touched any fish. Layla won't let me talk her into just putting him in the 140 with her ponies though...

Did I mention I love octopuses?

He's very nice but what in the world is on tv in the background on those clips? It sounds like Japanese porn!?!

they are definately very cool animals...i would still like to get one, but im at my limit on single critters for the moment

The octo is really cool. If they were longer lived, I would have to have one.

So what is the lifespan on these guys? What water conditions do they prefer? Nitrates? Phosphates? Salinity? Temp? said:
Sorry it was late when I saw your question and it didn't all register...

They need good water conditions like most everything else. They are big waste producers so they need extra filtration, usually in the form of an oversized skimmer. They can tolerate some nitrates, I try to keep mine under 20ppm. They prefer the higher range of salinity for seawater, 1.026. The species I keep are all tropical and your typical reef temperatures are fine, 76-78's where I prefer to keep my tanks when possible.

Higher temperature and more food = shorter lifespan.

I haven't seen Grover for 3 days. He built a den. Shoved every object he could carry into all the openings around his cave. So I assume he is actually a she and is preparing to lay eggs. This sucks because Abdopus' lay small eggs that hatch as planktonic babies.

I've had Kalypso since January 18th, and is showing no signs of slowing down.
