Monti Cap developing a hole through it

My Purple monti cap started developing a dead spot in the middle and growing some brown algea ON it in September. The coral is about 10" across and still growing everywhere else, but that spot is slowly spreading and has now developed a HOLE completely through it!
Does anybody know what is causing that? Is the best course of action to just snap that section off the colony?
I will add a pic in the next comment.

I would clip that dead section back so only live tissue is there. But what is you P04 and nitrates at

Sent from pay phone in the airport.

I had the same thing happen when something landed on my cap. I tried to clean off daily but ultimately had to take snipes and remove the dead spot. Since you have a clear-though hole will be easier to trim. Will heal back once you do this although with interesting swirls. :)

Thanks for the replies.
NO3 and PO4 are undetectable with my API kit. Except for some minor salinity fluctuations the tank has always been very stable. I run biopellets and I dose two part so I have never had poor water quality.
