Posted by: bump1 My VHOs are in need of new ends and new bulbs. Half of my VHOs went out on my tank today. I have 8 bulbs and was thinking rather then fixing them up I might go with some LEDs.We saw these and was wondering if they are any good and if they would work alone or would I need some other lighting for it to look right. My tank is a 8 foot by 24 by 25 and right now it is a LPS tank but we will be getting back into the SPSs later on.MarsAqua Dimmable 165W LED Aquarium Light Full Spectrum Reef Coral SPS LPSIm thinking 4 to do the tank. I don't know the first thing about LEDs. I love the looks of VHO and MH togeather or alone. Are they good or is it a bad brand. Will I have to fool with them a lot . Any and all help would be awesome! said:
Mars Aqua has a pretty good track record however you will need more than 4 for a tank that size especially if you're going to be going the SPS route. SBreef lights is another option that are similar with a little more functionality and a pretty good following also. The Mars Aqua and SB LEDs, like most of the blackbox/Evergrow family are tightly clustered arrays which is fine however all of the light is very concentrated. While you can remove the optics, it doesn't change the way light and shadows work. With only 4 fixtures, you'll end up with some shadowing and maybe strange growth patterns. I have seen RickyB's tank and it is gorgeous. He uses LEDzeal (link below). He pretty much covered the entire tank in LED's, I think he has 3 or 4 fixtures running the length of his tank. LedZeal does sell the arrays they use so if you wanted to go a DIY route that's an option. Just remember, when you pick an LED (or any light) the source of the light is going to impact shading and shadows. Even though the specs say it'll cover a 24x24 area you're going to get shadowing on the side that isn't facing the light unless. The only way to overcome this at present is to add more lights so that you're getting even light across the tank.LEDZeal - http://www.ledzealusa.com/SBreef - https://sbreeflights.com/We also have two sponsors that are LED specific if you'd like to peruse their sites. I've used both and had good experiences. Steve's offers some some stock and custom LED options also.
