i'm sure someone knows the answer to this:

as i was hooking up our new RO/DI system, my wife noticed the waste water line and asked me how much water we were "wasting". i looked up melev's site and it says ~4 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of good RO/DI water. So the question based on DFW water rates, how much "water cost" is it to produce 1 gallon of good RO/DI water?

Thanks,

Depends where you are and which "1000 gallon" you're in at the time. You also get to pay more for sewer due to water usage (even if you pipe the waste to your yard).

Some example rates per 1000 gallons

Frisco

Water:
$9.77 (meter) up to 2000
$2.28 2,001 - 15,000
$2.98 15,001 and up

Sewer:
$9.70 (meter) up to 2000
$2.22 2,001 and up
$38.59 max for sewer

Plano

Water:
Meter $12.79
First 1,000 included
$0.25 1,001-5,000
$1.50 over 5,000
$3.00 over 20,000

Sewer:
Meter $9.20
First 1,000 included
$3.22 over 1,000

Murphy

Water:
3/4" meter $8.50
1" meter $21.25
$1.95 per 1,000

Sewer:
Flat Rate: $32.98

Rowlett 10

Water:
<1" $10.00/month
$3.16 upto 25,000
$3.66 above 25,000

I don't have the answer to that one. However, I can say this:

When I bought my home in 1999, my water bill was $45 a month. When I added my RO/DI, it was $50 a month no matter how much water I made. It stays very steady at that rate. (Ignore the fact that trash collection rates and small price hikes have occurred.)

When I run my sprinklers during the summer months, my bill is $100 a month.

I run my waste water into the washing machine and use it for cold water washing. You could also run a line outside and water the yard too.

thanks guys! had no idea water was calculated that way. indeed we'll try to use some of the waste water for plants, etc.

yeah same here in the water bill went up like 5-6 bucks a month at most!! and i have the line run outside to a flower bed and yard...and i was able to turn that station off of my sprinklers...
