Another discussion on Ich

Yes, I've re-read on the Ich topics many times over and I'm restarting the topic and looking for some advice and opinions!

Back in August, I had a total tank crash (all the pumps died while I was out on vacation). Everything died! After several rounds of bleach, the tank was cycled for 6 weeks. After that, I got a few sand donations from members who have very healthy tanks. Then I added corals from our members here. Then fish from LiveAquaria. So, I can assume my tank has Ich!

I always want to have tangs in the display tank. So, I'm getting 4 from Live Aquaria: Yellow, Power Blue, Regal, Sailfin. I can count on the fact that they WILL get Ich. They seem to be the most susceptible when it comes to this type of parasite.

I have a 70G setup as quarantine and the 4 tangs will go there. Here's the part I want to hear your opinions. What chances do I have after 8 weeks of quarantine with no sign of Ich? I'm hoping (emphasis on HOPE), they will be fat and healthy to fight off the Ich in the main tank, but I really hate the hope part!

In the past, I have treated UNSUCCESSFULLY for Ich. I left the main tank fallow for 2 months (8 to 9 weeks), treated all fish in the QT with copper and yet, when I brought them back to the main tank, they went through an Ich cycle, but they did survive! My QT had a couple of live rock pieces, not sure if they render copper totally ineffective or not.

Opinions, lectures and advice are all appreciate!

Thanks,
Khoa

have you checked out Safety stop?

http://www.reefaddicts.com/content.php/375-Product-Review-Safety-Stop

I have used this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4615+19768&pcatid=19768
and only had inch in my display tank twice in 5 years from any fish I put in, it could be my luck, or the maintenance I do but I can say this works and is reef safe.
What about preventive steps? I feed my fish 2 vegie clips of Nori soaked in garlic 3 times a week.

Thank you guys! Please keep the suggestions coming. My tangs are in the 70-G QT, so I'll be treating with copper. I think I'll stock No-Ich and hope it helps the main tank when I transfer the tangs over in 2 months. Worst case, I'm out some money, but if it works, it's the money well spent!

I'll invest in the "Safety stop" at the next batch of fish, too!

Thanks,
Khoa

You might check this study out. Its from the university of Florida. I have 3 tanks that are completely ich free. I. Went 3 months with no fish in the first tank and have bounched all fish since. No copper or chemicals and only purchase live rock from a tank that had had no fish in it. It worked for me. It's a pain but your fish will thank you.

So, which treatment did you use? Or did you just make sure the tank went fallow for 3 months? Right now, I'm thinking fallow + copper treatment and it is certainly a PITA!

One question for you guys. If the tank has no fish, there will be no natural predator to algae. Those that went fallow, how did you control algae?
