Sump plumbing vs building a lid

Hello everyone! Just trying to get started as a complete new comer. Has anyone plumbed a 40 G breeder to add a stump below? I was originally going to use HOB equipment to start and get my feet wet but realized I really can’t cover the tank with this equipment. Should I plumb a sump or try and build a lid for the tank?

If you use Egg crate you can make a lid with a HOB filter or overflow to add a sump. I prefer the use/function of a drilled tank, so if money was not an issue and the glass is not tempered, that would be my vote.

... and if your 40G is tempered, then keep an eye on the dry goods forum marketplace here at www.dfwmas.org. I find people are thinking of changing up/out system esp this time of year as we approach, go thru holidays as well as into new year, and if you're patient you can get good deals. It's how I got back into the hobby without totally breaking my piggybank
