My 2year and 9month old 10 gal

Your tank is beautiful! I was just checking out your thread on nano-reef earlier, but never realized you were so close! I'm going to have to hit you up for some frags :D

I think the PC's look great, and if it's working for you I wouldn't change it.

what kind of sand are you using? as i said over at nano-reef, i'm super jealous of your setup.. :D

Really nice. Unless you want to start keeping significant numbers of SPS then I wouldn't worry about upgrading. Nothing you have in there needs it!

The sand is Caribsea Tahitian Moon sand. I like it a lot, but it is a pain to keep looking clean. As far as the light goes, I'm not really worried about intensity. It has more to do with the colors that I've heard 20k mh brings out in the corals. I actually have only seen pictures of corals under 20k mh and I've never seen one in real life. I went to Tranquil Scape the other day to see if the lights over the 1000 gallon where 20k, but they didn't know. Anyway, thanks for the nice comments and advice.

Yes, I mentioned that in the first post on the other thread. I'm just sucking them out for now, but I might try some FLE if that doesn't work. :D

Are you looking for growth at all? If you are wanting growth you shouldn't go higher than about 14k MH bulb. But if you're not wanting to do sps and are going to do lowlight stuff anyway 20k would be good. The problem with 20k is that it replicates more deepwater conditions. Alot of the photosynthetic corals we keep, especially sps, are found under lighting much closer to 5000k or 6500k spectrum. For what you're keeping the PCs look great although you really can't beat the shimmer effect of MH.

My only interest in metal halide for this tank is for color. Therefore, I will go with a 20000k and probably use a 32w 420nm actinic pc bulb aswell since the 20000k bulbs are suprisingly weak in the 420nm spectrum. The only corals I would like to see really take off in my tank are the zoas and I have recently been seeing evidence that the bluer the bulb, the better zoas do. I will be setting up a different tank in the next 6 months or so specifically for sps and I will be using 14000k bulbs on that tank.
