Mangroves - Do they need sand to grow?

[I want to put some Red Mangroves in my sump my question is do Mangroves require sand in order for them to grow. What else could I use in addition to the Mangroves?]

[Most often, Mangroves are floating in the water, at least at first. Put some stryfoam around the middle to bottom third, and let the tree float until the roots are fairly big. Mangroves usually have the roots half out of the water, and look like they are "walking", but when they are small, it is okay to have the roots submerged.

I think they need iodine or is that iron? I have to check, or someone will correct that....

Found the link from the Florida Enviromental Protection article, it's here:

[Sand is not required, actually from the research I have done nitrate and phosphate removal is most effect when the root ball is simply suspended in the water by floating the mangroves in styrofoam.

Check out these links where I found my info.

Red Mangroves
Dear WWM:

Do red mangrove's leaves need to be out of water or can they be
submerged? Will they die if the leaves are submerged?
<The Red Mangrove "can live as submerse, emersed or fully terrestrial (if well-hydrated)". The quote is from the article below, check it out, good stuff. -Gage

[I had mangroves before. They are kind of cool looking - I planted them inside of my display tank (15 inch deep). Maybe growth rate seems slow - I thought they were growing fast. My double in size, from 10 inch to 20 inch in about a year or so. They put out alot of roots which are good hiding place for pods. I got rid of them eventually because they did not work for me in the display tank (which lacks deep sand bed). What I did was using two acrylic containers - filled with sand to grow Mangroves. The containers were restricting water flow - and cause algae to grow around the box.]
