Zoapox??

I have what I thought was zoas being eaten by my Coral Beauty but when I moved the rock they were on to the bottom of the tank I noticed the little white things in or on it. I was wondering if this is what zoapox is and what the best measure to get rid of this is. Can I pull it out of the water and cut the bad parts off and dispose of them? I also wonder if it is the pox making them go away or could it be the CB eating them. She does not see to bother the others in the tank from what I can tellexcept they all were on the bottom of the tank except for the ones mounted on the larger peices of rock.

Tis Zoa pox. If you have Furan you can try treatments: see sticky under soft coral thread for links and treatment info. You probably don't need to cut the bad ones off and would be better treating the whole rock. I've had it so many times I usually treat with Furan at the first sign. Sometimes I've missed them and lose part of a colony or parts of colonies, but it has never wiped out my whole tank. Possibly the CB is eating the dead/dying ones, but I don't really know or have experience with that.

You need Furan -2. I have ordered mine from DFS, but I'm sure there's an LFS around that carries it also.

I do not have any Furan. Where can I get this at?? said:
Frank carries it, as does DNA I believe. Or order online. Those are fairly large ones.. when you dip, you can also very carefully pick them off with a needle. Don't gouge the polyps, but the brown lumps will come off once they start to react to treatment.

So I pick the piece that looks like sand off the polyp or the whole polyp? Can I use the dip for more than one dip? Is it something that I need to pull all my other zoa's out of the tank and dip also? I do not see a problem with the others and these are the newest to the tank? Sorry for so many questions but I am still new to the SW world.

why not try doing a Lugols dip first b4 a furan-2? I had 3 colonies doing the same as yours, I did the Lugols, and it all went away after a week. The Furan dip REALLY stresses your coral, and why go for the thing that can stress the most when you may be able to fix it with something that is a bit less stressful? :) its like using a full body cast to treet a broken arm.

just my 2 cents though hehe :)

Lugol's is an iodine solution. You can find it at most stores Kent makes one as well as Brightwell aquatics. It will have instructions on how to do a coral dip. That should work its something we do to all new corals and its definitely something you should be using as an additive anyways. You would normally add it to your aquarium at the rate of 1 drop per 20 gallons weekly and its definitely something you should do.

I do add Kents Iodine each week of a cap full. Is this the same stuff as the Lugol's? Or is Lugol's a name brand?

Lugol's Iodine is much more concentrated then the Kent Iodine that comes in the green bottle. Lugol's Iodine is similar to the iodine you see used in the medical field for cleaning wounds. Some people refer to it as "monkey blood." I believe the iodine you're referring to is clear and much less concentrated. As other's have noted I've used lugol's to treat corals in the past, including zoanthids, and it works wonders. Lugol's isn't a brand name rather a type of iodine.

OK I am with everyone now. I am goin gto go to a store now and pick some up. Thanks for all the help and I will let you know what happens with this.

They are doing great......I have been keeping an eye on the others I have in the tank and they are fine. It is just those and I am not sure what happenend to cause it. It was after I added the CB and I thought it was just her eating the zoas.

No one knows what triggers it, but it does appear to happen around this time of year more often. No idea why.

BTW..Lugols is effective at treating infection, but has minimal impact on fungus which is what zoapox is. Furan-II is still the better option, though Lugols in combination with it, certainly won't hurt and may help the tissue remain healthy as it heals.

Mine are always triggered by sudden temp changes. Such as yesterday :( I had moved a light and it was closer to the refugium thus warming it and the tank 81.5)... then I left to run a couple errands and left the fan running... so by the time I got back the temp was 77.7 This morning I knew to check the zoas (palys don't seem to be affected) and my favorite red ones had spots. So I decided to try the Lugols treatment rather than the Furan. I just took tank water, about 1 cup and added 2 drops of Kent's Lugol's solution. After about 5 minutes I took a wooden skewer and with the pointy end started scraping off the pox spots. To my surprise they came off much easier. I removed two polyps that were bad. Rinsed them in fresh saltwater from the same tank and then put them in another 1 cup of water and only added 1 drop. I cleaned the rest of the pox spots off. I put them in the bottom of the tank and some are starting to open and are looking pretty good. So I'll just keep an eye on them and see how they do.

Lance I'm glad it worked for you.

Once the zoanthids are treated with Furan or Lugols will the zoapox keep coming back?
I'll do what ever it takes to irradicate this now before all of my colonies grow beyond what I can treat by taking them out.
I went as far as throwing away the ones that infected my tank but I may have been too late and I don't want to loose any more

Not really... stress and temp changes can trigger it... sometimes they get it and you can't tell, they continue to open up and grow etc. Furan and/or Lugols just helps the treated frag/colony, it does not remove or eliminate it. Think of it as herpes (cold sores)... they popup on lips and such in the winter or under stress...no one else can tell they have it until it pops up. Even though the cold sore goes away, the virus is still there.

I'm going to isolate all of the zoas and treat the h..l out of them and try to get rid of it. Otherwise I'm debating on not transfering them to the new tank when it's up.
