Zoa Dip

I would like to "dip" some zoas i am adding to a 20 gallon nano - i have read that you can dip them in freshwater for 10 minutes with a drop of lugol's and a drop of flatworm exit ... is this the best choice?? Thanks.

also, should we do this for rics and shrooms?

There's a sticky under this section that has a couple links for treatments. I also needed some info on dipping and did a yahoo search "zoanthid dipping procedure" and a bunch of good links came up. I found this thread after several links:

I had to dip mine tonight and pulled off a bunch of Foraminiferans. These are my first zoos so all new to me. Hope that link above helps.

I do believe that the author of that thread later increased the lugols to double the amount in receipe listed there. So he was adding about 4 drops of lugols per gallon. You might want to do an extended search on him and see if it's there. Just as an FYI, the lugol's that we use actually suggests up to about 14-15 drops per gallon for the dip, but the few times we've gotten near that, it seems to be a bit detrimental. Anyway, the above is a good start. Watch for the zoo spiders as well as none of the above will kill them, just seems to make them groggy a bit and they fall off it seems a bit easier.

Rather than start a new thread thought I'd tag on this one. I just prepared to dip some new zoas I picked up today. I had ordered Kent's Lugol. Its directions say "to use a dip for corals add 40 drops to 1 gallon of aquarium water." That's significantly more than anything stated here or in other threads. I did not do that because it seemed like a lot. Is that because they state "aquarium water" and the lesser drops of 4 to 5 are used in RO water? I only used 4 drops to 1 gallon of RO for 8 minutes. They were rinsed and then placed in quarantine. About 30 minutes later upon checking on them saw a limpet going across one of the colonies which I moved to my refugium and what appeared to be a foraminiferan but had more points on it. Should I have made a stronger dip?

My standard dip for zoos and palys is 1/2G of RO water, 10 drops of lugols, 5 or 6 drops of Flat Worm Exit.

Dip heads down (Dunking) for the first minute then drop it in heads up and soak for a few mins. Then shake and dunk vigorously, twisting and swishing it around. I also have started scrubbing the rock/plugs with a toothbrush.

I will be doing something new here soon and that is using Topic Marin's coral dip.

I think I may have misquoted the amount I said seemed to be a bit detrimental in my original post above, as the Kent's Lugol is where we originally read the very high amount and I think we adjusted it for about 1/2 gal of water. In any case, yes... the 40 drops even in saltwater does seem to be a bit hard on the ones we've tried. Dave's post above is more like what we do as far as the lugols is concerned, but there does appear to be a fairly large range so it's not too critical to vary a little.

I saw that dip advertised some time ago and wondered how well it worked myself. I've been meaning to order some and just haven't gotten around to it really, so I will be very interested in hearing some results/experience with it when you get it.
