Your refugium... - What ya got down there?

[I only have some macro algae, a bit of live rock and then the pods...Should I have snails or hermits in there? What do you have in yours? What size is it?

Mine is about 12 gallons and goes with my 60 gallon reef and 20 gallon sump.]

[My refugiums are 'cut to fit' my own stands.

The 29g has a 10g refugium with macro aglae, pods, bristleworms, snails, the occasional hermit, stray mushrooms, a Crown Conch that I never saw again, a Xanthid crab that I don't trust, baby brittle starfish, spaghetti worms, other worms, clear flatworms, the heater and of course tank water.

The 55g is about the same, only is only is 5g of space.

1.5" of sand in both, and a few pieces of LR rubble just to weigh down the macro aglae.]

You can click on "Track This Topic" at the base of the thread, if you like. Bottom left button.]

[10 lbs live rock, 3 inch sandbed, some razor macro, turtlegrass, 2 hermits ive exiled there, bristle worms, spaghettie worms, copapods, mini carpet anemone and some limpets.]

[I don't run a sump but I'm reading Mike Paletta's "Ultimate Aquariums" and it is interesting to see how some of these tanks use refugiums. Some of the refugiums use xenia along with macroalgae for nutrient export. They harvest the xenia along with the macroalgae.

The other interesting thing is that they use "good" lighting such as pc's or vho's. The idea is to get everything to grow fast so they are using up nutrients in the system.]

A couple of years ago at the MACNA in Fort Worth Dr. Ron Shimek did an analysis of macro algaes and xenia. He pretty much told everyone that xenia was better at nutrient export for use in a refugium than any macro algae. His basis was that something about the variance of different things it took out of the water.
I pretty much have chaetomorpha macro algae, a power head, some small pieces of live rock, about 4" live sand and varous crabs, snails, and critters. Oh and it is on a reverse lighting schedule from my tank with two 55watt power compacts. I usually have to take a bucket of salt worth of macro algae out every two months.]

[Well that explains why My macro in my refugium grows slowly. I have 3 different types of xenia in my main tank, that I export about half a bucket full every month. I was wondering why my Macro doesnt grow in my refugium, esp when I have 65K Pcs down there...]

[How much and what kind of light do you all run? I installed 3 20W halide pendants (like under counter lighting) to illuminate under my stand and light my fuge. They have UV blockers. I'm concerned that I'm not getting enough light. I honestly don't know the spectrum they're putting out, but it seems to be along the lines of incandecent. Opinions?]
