Your ideas?

I posted this on another website but thought I might look here for some more ideas.

Thanks for any input

We can't see the pictures unless we log in over there. You might get more help if you post your images and situation on our site.

Thanks for the heads up!
Looks like the tube popped of the outlet and started shooting water into the hood. Apparently some of it filled the plastic and got to the electronics. I believe the red color is from electric current (which I felt when I opened the tank) and the salt. Nothing was in the tank but sand and rock.
Any ideas?

total speculation, but maybe rust from the light? but i would expect to see it settled on the sand and i dont. crazy looking for sure. have you tested any of the water parameters? maybe get a copper test kit too.

I had a similar thing happen long ago when a clamp failed over the sump and dropped one of those cheap fluorescent tube hoods into the sump. I didn't have nearly that dramatic a color change, but I did get some decent red tinting to the water. There were fish and cleaning crew alive in the tank when I discovered the accident (only about an hour after it happened [at a maximum]), but even with a good sized water change, enhanced skimming, and carbon, everything died within a day. I hope that your tank doesn't suffer any negative effects, but I would test for everything you can, add fresh carbon, and do a major water change at the very least.

No I haven't done anything with it yet. I had to try to get all the red water out if the carpet last night. I think the last poster my be right the red seems to be coming from the ballast. I am going to empty out the water, soak and rinse the rock and sand with clean water. I think I am going to have to disassemble the entire hood and get all the salt off of the electronics. I realized today that none of the electronics were on at the time so the board shouldn't be fried. I will have to wait a few days for it all to dry before trying it. If anyone has a few bulbs that you replaced for a 14 bio. I could sure use them. I would rather not spend 50.00 bucks for lights only to find out the hood is fried.
Thanks

There was nothing in there and I'm in no hurry so I am just going to start over. I had just cycled it for 6 weeks or so and was just about to buy new lights and a CUC. Funny thing is I had to order a new control board for it so the hood has not been on for the entire 6 weeks. I just put it on about 3 days ago.

Wow, that's intense. My concerns would be toxic contamination, ie copper, melted plastic residue etc. I'd do a copper test just to be safe and then once its cycled try an invert like a shrimp or a few hermits (if you want them). If anything in there is toxic, the inverts would show it first I think.

Glad there wasn't a fire.

Wow, that's a new one.

Starting fresh is best. You'll have to let us know what kind of damage your hood encountered after it is taken apart and scrutinized.

Hoses should always have hose clamps. I saw on the other site someone recommended zip ties, but seriously, they aren't going to do a good enough job. You don't want this to happen twice. Instead, get some of these that lock tight around the tubing.

After you have it set up again, I would buy the product called PolyFilter (TM), not some off brand sponge that is named similarly. You want the product that looks thin like a shammy, and changes color based upon what it pulls out of the water. That stuff is going to be in the sand and the rock. Here's a link to the one I mean. FYI, they changed the packaging to a colorful reef scene.

Well today I had a few minutes so I took the tank outside and rinsed all the rock and sand. After wiping down the inside and agitating the sand for awhile the water ran clear. I am going to put the rock back in and refill it with salt water. Let it run for a few days and do 2-3 80% water changes over the next week or so. Then I will try to do a normal cycle. I'll run over to DNA for any test I don't have. The controller board seems to be fine but the light holders are ruined. I think I'm going to have to just replace the entire hood to be safe. So anyone that has upgraded their lights and want to sell there stock hood shoot me a PM. I will try to keep updates and pics for anyone that is curious about how it turns out. Thanks for all the post.
Note : I called Oceanic and they had no idea why it turned red. But after doing a google search I found out I may have been making hydrogen!!
