Yellow Watchman Goby won't stay off overflow.

I bought a really small yellow watchman goby. He is like 1".

I thought these things burrow under the rocks in the sand!!

This fish is crazy. He goes to the top of the tank. And into the overflow.

I have found him 2 times in the sump! in the 1 day I have had him.

He does it on purpose too! I watch him wanting to swim up up up.. and through the overflow teeth! AHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways I have him in my refuge for now. But it's lighted 24/7.. is this ok?? I guess I will need to feed the fuge now and then for him to be ok? Some shrimp or something..?

Sounds more like a yellow clown goby. Are you sure it's a watchman? Yellow clown gobies like to hang out higher up, often perching on the glass. Watchman gobies usually tend to go for rock work or somewhere they can make a burrow. Where'd you get him?

It's a watchman for sure.
I got it from a local place here in Stephenville.

There is a 4 inch yellow tang that was chasing him :/ when he was first introduced....
Maybe thats it? BUT sheesh hide in the rocks right? not the overflow.....

He's just smart!! Knows the tang can't get him there!! Maybe if you put a PVC pipe that he can fit in and turn around in (but that the tang can't get into) into the sand and put him near it when you get him from the sump, then he might feel safe? Just a thought.

That's funny that you mentioned this, because I moved my fish over to my new tank, and after the third day, I found my watchman in the bubble trap of my sump. That crazy guy. I guess he hadn't found a good home to build yet. That must have been a fun ride for him  He's settled in now. He has a nice little home dug out towards the back of the tank. I would just give him some time or like mentioned put a screen or something on the PVC opening.

I have a yellow watchman that was living in a 12 gallon Nanocube for a while. Somehow he was consistently able to get into the rear chambers of the tank. At one point, I thought he had died and been eaten by the cleanup crew. I found him in the rear chamber of the Nanocube when I decided to break down the tank. The tank sat for a couple of days with no flow or lights and only a minimal amount of water. I found him when I was removing the liverock that was still in the chamber where he was located. He is alive and happy to this day, even though he seldom comes out where I can see him. He also now has a pistol shrimp companion.

Wow, we got a pair of yellow watchman gobies in Nov, we thought they died or something, but we found both of them in our overflow around Christmas. They are still there because we haven't gone to the trouble of getting them out. Maybe this weekend... Our theory is that they were scared and maybe they tried to escape??

Get him a shrimp and a tube and he'll probably feel like he's home.
Then you'll never see him, like they normally act.
I have a huge 3 y.o. ywg I raised from a baby, in a super docile tank and he still hides when he sees me.
They're so quirky and shy, and as hearty of a fish as you can get.

you can try some gutter guard from your local lowes or HD and useing zip ties to put it around the teeth of your overflow and it will keep him out of it

Well I got my YWG yesterday and today he is in my overflow. lol. I am fixen to place the gutterguard on my overflows I will take a few pics of how I do it for a little how to.

the only problem with that is.. if mine got close to the teeth.. and sucked against it, he would not be able to swim off of the teeth. The thing is like 1" big...

it would suck him right against that gutter gaurd. and probbably kill him. since he would have nowhere to go.

They aren't active fish that will hunt for pods or brine. Consider the shape of his mouth. He will need some real food that floats past their cave. Mysis and green stuff &/or flake or pellets- They need their meat and vegetables.
Is your fish being harassed by the tang? You might consider moving the tang for a day or two, changing the rocks around and allowing the YWG to find a nice spot and settle down. Nicki has a trick where she puts a mirror up to the tank when she adds a new fish. Then the acclimated fish are so busy trying to get their reflection they ignore the new fish.
