xenia vs. feather duster

some xenia is overgrowing my feather duster. the feather duster has attached itself to a rock (and has been there for a while) well the xenia decided to grow around it. it has not grown over the top of the tube but it has grown almost completely around it. i am afraid to try to cut it off for fear of damaging the feather duster

any suggestions????

I barely know what I'm talking about, so wait for Marc or Serk to tell you that my suggestions are REALLY bad before you try this...

How about cutting back the Xenia? But it back a couple of inches from the tube, then lay down rock, glue, something that will make the space immediately around the tube unappealing to the Xenia.

Even if the Xenia grow back, at least you've bought some time.

I love my pulsing Xenia, but if I had to choose between the Xenia and the tube, I'd take the tube. The Xenia has a better chance of being relocated.

Btw, what kind is it. Maybe I'll just take that extra off your hands. :)

Kurt - I'm not guru! I'm still learning too, I'm just more vocal about the tiny tidbits I have learned over the years...

IMHO, until/unless it starts crowding over the opening to the tube, I think it'd be kinda cool looking actually...

If it does start to crowd the opening, it shouldn't be too hard to get some sharp tipped scissors in there and give the Xenia a hair cut. If you're worried about it doing so, you could give it a hair cut now to trim it back away from the opening. You wouldn't have to get it all, the base would remain, and more stalks would grow from that base, but it'd just be a regular maintenance issue for you to keep it trimmed back.

If you're really worried about it, I'd get a hypodermic and inject the stalks with vinegar, but only one or two at a time so you don't get a mass die-off or get too much vinegar around the worm...

I had some of my xenia grow on the tube of the duster, it just grew and grew until it go too heavy for the tube to support. I just stuck some scissors in there and snip snipped it off being careful I don't cut the tube. they are growing back but at least the duster opens now.

I wonder, do feather dusters and xenia just sorta go together?

I've got a big pulsing xenia colony (well, about 10 stalks covering about 4x6" -- big for me), and there are about 8-10 feather duster tubes all around the bases. The worms are only about 2" long right now, but they seem active and happy.
