would this cause a cycle?

current tank is a 22 gallon finnex m tank with a 150 watt hqi 14k phoenix bulb.

I currently have 15 pounds of live rock and a 2 inch sand bed. Tank has been up for over 3 yrs. I ordered some dry rock from reefcleaners.org and it should come in next week along with my starboard. I plan to ditch the sand and remove all but 5 pounds of live rock. Would removing my sand and change of rock cause a cycle? I was told by john at reefcleaners to just rinse the rock with ro/di water and it should be good to go since thier rock is always soaked prior to getting to them.

id be more concerned with the sand causing problems, if you have not kept up on maintaining it well over the years, you could have spots with build up that will likely be released when you try to remove it

ill be removing all the tank critters before i remove the sand and convert to bare bottom. also the sand has been kept up and is only a yr old since i had to change it when i moved.

I think since you're removing the sand and only keeping 5 pounds of rock. Plus to do that you'll be making a big water change with it. So yes, I think your tank will cycle some.

What should you do to the sand? The sand in my tank is 2 plus years and I've never done anything to it. said:
Not speaking from experience but reading other posts, most have rinsed the sand out.
