Wish me luck - trying a PBT

This fellow is roughly 2.5” and is currently alone in my established 30 gallon quarantine. After 6 weeks he/she will be headed to my 150 gallon reef. So far the fish eats flake and is happily picking at a nori sheet placed in the tank.

No signs of ich (yet) but if it does develop I have experience successfully taking fish through a hypo-salinity treatment. Any tips/pointers as I sit back and cross my fingers?

(That white mark on the yellow fin is a reflection, no visible marks/blemishes on this fish)

Petland Lewisville, they have really been looking up lately and they had a lot of nice livestock on hand when I stopped by yesterday.

I also considered 5 or 6 green chromis they had, but my daughter boycotted them in favor of the PBT. I’ve been wanted to try one of these for quite some time, and this is among one of the healthiest looking specimens I have seen to date. There was another equally impressive specimen that was slightly larger than this one, but with a 30 gallon QT I did not want to push it.

I hope I do not regret adding the fish at this time, as I have other fish I still wish to add and I figure this should have been last. But like I said, this was a really good looking specimen and I decided to take my chances.

Wow Tim that PBT does look great. I had one too, but I bought him right before I upgraded tanks (unplanned) and he didn't make the switch.

Good luck

He looks real good. Kudos for the q tank also by the way. I'm sure you'll be successful. I've actually had great luck with them. I killed one but have had success with 2 others that are now on to other happy homes! I hypo them both and they came out great!

This must be the weekend for PBT's. I also found one in great shape at Plano Pets on Friday. He's about 3-4 inches. I kept a Powder Brown one time for a couple of years before selling him, but this is my first try with a Powder Blue. He's grazing off of the rocks today, but haven't seen him eat anything else, when I've fed the other fish.

This is the first tang I've added to my tank since converting to reef almost a year ago, so I went out Saturday and found some Nori. However, the first piece I place in the tank, rubber banded to a rock, virtually came apart and I ended up with tiny pieces all over the tank. This isn't normal, is it? Maybe I got the wrong kind. The package says Musubi Nori, Dried Seaweed.

Here is the one I got from Kwl1763 and one of my favorite fish. masharp1126, did you see the clown tang they had at plano pets. Those are one of my fav's too.

knock on wood, I have kept a powder blue now for 1 year....
what worked for me was feeding very small portions of garlic meaty food with Zoe twice a day for the first 2-3 months or so....(a plug for Mr Ly's garlic mix at Fish Paradise, I swear by the stuff). I also fed a small piece of nori on a clip every other day......

he grazes constantly on the rock and the back wall.....and now he gets the garlic mix once a day (all the fish eat this) and the nori once a week...

fwiw mine will not touch flake or pellet food at all...

Keith,

So did you put the two that survived straight into hypo as a precautionary measure before seeing any evidence of ich? I have considered doing this (as another member has suggested doing this as well) but did not want to stress out the fish needlessly if by some good fortune the fish is free of the parasite. While I have experience with hypo, I know keeping PH stable can be a bit of a challenge.

Tim

I put them both into straight hypo. In fact I do that with all my fish now. Lower it over a period of 2-3 days. 1.009 for a month then up over 4-5 days. It's worked great for me and the last fish I lost was over a year ago and it was the PBT I didn't do hypo. He was in qt (no hypo) but I had to go out of town on business and he died while I was gone.

I haven't found it stresses them at all. You do have to watch your parameters. I use a relatively big tank. It's a 29G hex so the water is much more stable then say a 10G but I still did 10G water changes every 2-3 days. It's just part of it for me. It's worth knowing I'll have healthy fish going in!

I currently have a PBrownT that I have had for about 3 years. When I ordered it I also ordered two PBlueT's for some friends that I housed in my tank until they get healthy. All of them had ich and I did not use the hyposalinity method in getting them healthy. I soaked brine in garlic and fed them seaweed. This method worked well for me.

That one looks great!

I have seen scottj's PBT and it is awesome!! I need to get down to Mr Ly's and get some of the food.

Hey guys...

Good luck with those pbt's...just remember, they get fiesty!. I have a very pretty and healthy one. He was pretty cool after I put him in my 150, in fact, for a while, 7-8 months...but then he declare himself king. Mine unfortunatelly took after my foxface. Chased for several months and then made up for a couple, then problems again and, well...stressed him out to much and he passed (the ff)

Feed well..I give mine NOri just about 5 days a week and he chows (garlic soaked)..Odd though, mine wont touch flake, but loves pellet and just about anything else.

(If you want to see him, just look on the back of last yr's calendar :D )

Thank you so much for the tips. I have kept nori in the tank at all times, and am feeding an OSI spirulina fortified flake (garlic and zoe soaked) two times a day. So far so good!

I purchased mine while I was in california and had them shipped back here. It was at a place called aquatic Gallery. Very nice place. He flew them back here for me and one of my friends picked the fish and stock up for me at the airport.

The tangs got the ich from the airplane ride. Actually one of them was in bag that was almost ran out of water when they arrived.

5 whole days and the fish is still alive... :D

Eating very well, no signs of disease, and tank params are holding steady.

Only 31 days left!
