Wireless Gaming Adapters

I am curious which wireless gaming adapters people are using with their ac3's I would like to use one with mine but just wanted a few opinions as to which one works best. Any and all opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary,

I saw that other thread and just forgot to get in touch with you about it, if you need help getting it setup let me know. As far as the gaming adapters, I've used the following, though I burn through them from time to time...

Linksys WGA54G - This one lated about 6 months or so, Frank uses it as well and his has survived for longer.
http://netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WirelessGRouters/WGR614.aspx - Using this one now.

I am also using a Linksys WGA54G for a year and nine months now on my LIghthouse controller. Have never had any problems and it was easy to setup.

Hi Mary,
on mine I actually use a wireless print server. It has usb ports ( for devices like printers and some cameras ) and has a 4 port Ethernet switch which allows me to connect multiple devices in the living room where my tank is.
I use a Netgear WGPS606 and it works flawlessly for me.

What do you mean by "I burn through them from time to time"? Did they fail? Since they have no moving parts I would think that the failure rate would be very low.

Gaming adapters are harder to find now that the newer consoles such as the PS3 and Wii have wireless built into their systems. The linksys have always seemed over priced to me though I have been trying to talk myself into their wirless-n gaming adapter. Here is an adapter at a good price.

I've never used it but it seems to get good reviews. You can also use a music bridge as an adapter. I've seen linksys refurbs for under $40.

I've got a netgear gaming adapter on my Xbox 360 that has been going strong for several years. I wish I would have known they were going to discontinue them right after I got mine, I would have bought another one for future use.

Another option would be networking over powerlines. I use this to stream video to my PS3 in my living room. The wireless couldn't keep up with HD video but the powerline adapter has been smooth on 1080p so far. The wireless-n connection to my wife's pc can be spotty so I've thought about adding another powerline adapter and then a router to hers. I figure I could plug her computer and my AC3 into the router.

Small device with a few electronic components. Typically these fail due to overheat stress, so make sure they are in an open area.

Charlie,

That is true and mine is out in the open and would not expect it to fail. If closed up in a cabinet with high temps I understand. I wanted DaveJ to explain his situation.

I use the D-Link DWL-G820. I got one used on Ebay for $32 shipped.

It's been awhile since I've shopped for these, but the difficulty I had was finding a model that supported WPA security. It surprised me to find that most only support WEP encryption, which is fine if you don't use WPA in your home network. The DWL-G820 supports WPA. Been using it for about 6 months now with my AC3, and it's been working great.
