When & if i move my ponies out of there tank into the new one i need to know if this will work.

I want to use egg crate to make a shelf that will split the tank in 1/2. It will be a tight fit so the critters cant get into the other 1/2 of the tank.

I want to house my mantis in the bottom 1/2 of the tank & the Leaf Fish in the top 1/2 of the tank. Will this work & still keep my to critters safe from each other ? I belive the tank is 18 inches tall.

I just dont know if the mantis will or can get at the leaf through the great. Can he get the leaf if it sits on the crate ? Maybe even a second layer to make a thicker bottom for added protecion ?

What do you all think, can it work ?

The mantis stays at the bottom on the sand most of the time & the leaf will give me somthing else to look at in the top 1/2. So im thinking why not. So i want to make sure the shrimp cant have at my Leaf Fish.

I'd be a bit wary of it myself, but as a test, you could try putting the egg crate in, and put some bait in the non-Mantis area to see if the Mantis can figure out a way to get it...

As I'm sure you know, Mantis are VERY smart, if there's a way for them to do something, they WILL figure it out...

I agree, one of the reasons that mantis kind of freak me out. Everytime I look at one it's like he's just trying to figure out how to club me on the forehead. But yeah, the eggcrate is going to have to be pretty secure to keep a mantis out. And at a good size a mantis might even be able to break eggcrating.

Thanks

I will go ahead & use 2 layers of egg crate. It will have some good support under it becouse i want to use a few heavy hunks of LR to hold it down & in place. I realy like the test idea & will do it for sure with bait first & then with a crab or a fish that can be used as dinner for him after a week or two in the top half to see how it goes.

Thanks for all your input.
