Will a single durso flood?

Many methods of running a quiet overflow drain require more than one hole in the overflow box. Since I only have one, I went with the durso style drain. My first question is, without an emergency flood pipe am I risking a flood? OR will it not flood due to the fact that if the water rises to the point of completely covering the hole on top, it will create a siphon and flush? It's a 1" drain pipe I was considering upsizing to 1 1/4" so I could further increase the flow. Currently my pump is pushing 580 gph on a 75 gallon. The pump is adjustable and I have it turned down all the way but, would like to open it up giving me closer to 1000 gph. My second question is, How can I increase the flow but also keep the drain quiet, with only one overflow drain? Any input is much appreciated.

Your drain will work fine as long as it doesn't get clogged. I've only run Durso standpipes in all my tanks since 2002 and never had an overflow. Your pump should only push up enough water that the drain can handle, and no more. You don't need more flow from a return pump; its job is to get the water that was filtered in the sump back up to the display tank. Increasing the rate of flow can make a drain louder, so that's another reason not to do it.

If you want more flow in the reef, add another pump in the display section. Most people use something like a Vortech, Tunze, Jaboe or similar pump to move water, which are variable speed.
