why no bio-wheel?

i have had a 5.5 ecplipse tank running for about six months and i didnt bother taking the bio wheel out. does it cause problems?

Thanks, chris

Exactly. It creates an ideal situation for nitrifying bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate but that's it. It will get dirty causing more breakdown, leading to high nitrates so unless it is kept super super clean (like every couple days) it will produce excess nitrate. Better to remove the waste through skimming, siphoning, than to trap and breakdown to nitrate.

thanks for the info, it seems like everything is doin fine but im gonna take it off anyway. probably just put some small pieces of live rock or macro in there.

Thanks, chris

by the way kwl1763, have you set the tv up yet? if you have any problems with it or any questions give me a call. Im watchin the UT vs USC game on my 60" and football games look amazing on these TV's.

We had an eclipse hood that we were trying to upgrade the lighting in, and it proved to be a total pain in the you know what. When we eventually decided to get rid of the whole hood and run a fuge, our nitrates, which we had been struggling with forever, dropped to nothing.
