Hi I have a new tank set up... 90gal with a 30gal sump and skimmer....I had a saltwater store and a good friend help plumb my tank all is well.... I put all the rocks in (not live) all white atm no sand (waiting on sand from MBZ). I had he saltwater store come fill my tanks its been running about a week skimmer is working... But my water is not clear at all its kinda light green kinda like lake water only cleaner...I was told once I get more LIVE stuff it will go away I wamma make sure this is normal or is their something im doing wrong? Flow mag12 and 2 k4's Any ideas ? [smilie=worried.gif]

Could be your lighting or algae on the sides or glass tops. If you don't have actinic bulbs on a glass tank you will always get the "green" color.

Hi,

It sounds like a algae bloom of some kind. Are you sure that treated tap water wasn't used during the fill-up? You can try running some carbon or better yet find some Chemi-pure elite and run that, it will leave you with some pretty clear water in no time.

Cheers,

Do you use or have green flake food or pellets? Could someone else be (over)feeding that food to your tank when you aren't there to see it?

No fish or any live stuff in my tank I put a big bag of carbon a few days ago.... I dont turn on any lights yet I have 2 250w mh and 2 t12's Im turn on lights and have a look today and see what it looks like. I have a window near by had no choice on where this tank went. I dont think that much light is hitting it someone said a uv St. would help I have a feeling its not the cause Im thinkin it just my be from break in? Keep ideas coming anyone in Irving wanna have a look fill free to stop by :) Just pm me ^^

If you have a refugium on the new tank with dying algae, the water will always be green until you remove the algae, or figure out why its dying.

Sounds like light from your window is causing a algal bloom. Run some carbon, poly filter. Make sure your not using any additives, some chemicals can turn your water green....What are all your water parameters ? Try running a diatom filter and see if it clears.

I understand that your not using the lights on your tank yet. I was just wondering what K they were becuase it looks green in the picture and was wondering if it wasnt just the lights making it look that way? I guess it just looks bright and cloudy is what im seeing. whats all that foam in your sump coming from?

Your tank is still cycling...zero ammonia is good and you should start seeing the nitrite decrease and nitrate increase a bit. Once your ammonia and nitrite are at zero it has finished cycling....until then I really wouldn't worry about anything. Also note that not having a lot of actual LR will extend your cycle time imo. You can always have a lfs double check your parameters for you.

Cheers,

update water is clearing out alittle bit cant wait to get my sand from MBZ :) [smilie=rofl.gif]

yea brandon your still cycling... the skimmer poop will help a little to boost the bacteria.. some people use raw shrimp to boost cycling and some people i heard piss in their tanks to kick off the ammonia... i used vodka to cycle and it made a faster cycle at home.. the vodka is a carbon source for the bacteria and makes it bloom faster.. the skimmer poop was just a kicker for the bacteria.. but yea let your tank take its course... if theres anything you have to learn in this hobby it's patience.. there is no overnight fix for cycling or a week for that matter.. also you buying the sand that late in the cycle could force another cycle to happen.. due to ammonia pockets and other unmoved detrius from the sand..

Well the tank is looking alot cleaner ^^ I should be getting sand soon from MBZ its gonna be full of life! That same day I put sand in I will also add alot of live rock... Anyways TY TY TY all that helped here are some new pics of tank looking cleaner and my one of my lazy dogs getting some R & R from the nice soft water noise ^^
oo ya im going to need a chiller my water is like 87+ 0o I need to look into this more....
