Why is Ca/KH/Mg ratios so important to maintain?

I am finally finding time to start getting all my Ca/KH/Mg ratios in tune, but find myself pondering "why". What exactly happens when everything is "perfect"?

My main concern in looking at the ratios of Ca to KH is how steep the KH must change along with a small change in Ca.

i.e. Ca = 450, KH should be 12.5 dKH, but at Calcium 400, dKH should be 5.6 (obviously too low) as per the calculators. 12.5 seems too high, and 5.6 is too low. But, it is somewhat challenging to keep Ca floating right in between.

So, how many people actually abide by the Ca/KH Ratio? Or do you just get your Ca near 450, and keep your KH happy between 8 and 11 degrees?

Guess the same question applies to Mg, but not is imperative for me to understand as KH.

Here is a good place to start.
