Who uses filter socks?

I have to replace mine every 3-5 days. I don't mind that part too much. The part that bothers me is when I turn them inside out to rinse them. They are FILLED with pods.

I've been dipping them in water after turning them inside out and all the pods jump off, but curious to hear about others experiences.

I am a lazy glass cleaner. If I go too long, I put a sock on to catch all the sheets of filth that peels off of the glass as the easy blade goes by. Other than that I try not to use them.

I have always used filter socks and although I get some pod's(amphipod's) in the bottom and probably more of the smaller copepod's that I can't visibly see, I do not feel that it impact's my tank's pod population at all. I previously maintained a mandarin pair for a couple of years while alos using sock's and never saw any issues. YMMV

Cheers,

I have vacillated between continuous use of them, and no use at all, which is where I have been now for several months. My thinking now is to let everything flow naturally through the system, unless I see something that I don't want flowing through there, or if it looks to be an excessive amount of things floating in the water, then I put them in place for a bit.

Agreed, I run them all the time too.

I love how they keep the tank polished but I'm not using them right now. Got tired of cleaning them. My sump is dirty as hell !! They'll eventually go on again.

Thanks for the feedback y'all. I really love them for the amount of crap they pull out. Dietrus seems to be way down compared to prior tanks. Glad you were still able to keep a mandarin Ron! I want one bad!!!
