Who makes the best Protein Skimmer these days

Hi all,

Would appreciate everyone chiming in on this. I have a 30" tall twin needle-wheel pump Euro Reef on my 175 FOWL tank. It's a great, workhorse piece of equipment, but...

Problem is, when we moved, I placed the tank is in a very loud room (i.e. stone floors, no carpet, minimal sound absorption) right under our bedroom. And the hum from the skimmer is a bit obnoxious when you're trying to sleep.

I see a lot of new designs have come onto the market over the last decade (since I was last in the market for a skimmer).

So my question is: Who makes the best, QUIET, in-sump skimmer these days? Any advice is appreciated.

Nice design. Looks like an SWC 180 would work pretty well for me. How's the build quality and where did you buy yours?

Thanks!

Have you tried putting silicon baking sheets under the sump and another sheet under the skimmer? MY SRO was driving me crazy until I added the baking sheets. Worked so well I put another piece under my mag pump and feed pumps. Now the only things I can hear are the vortechs, fans, and the calcium reactor.

I have not. That's a new one on me! I did have some neoprene pads under the pumps, but somehow they disappeared during the move. Where could I go to get silicon baking sheets? Target or would I need to go to someplace like Bed, Bath & Beyond?

I have silicone under my return pump and it works great!!! We didn't use the mat. My husband is an engineer and he had some silicone from work we used. Makes it so much quieter!!!

I used these. They were 10$ish at target. They also had a thicker one for dog food bowls but they had a lip on them and were not square.

I guess it depends if your pump is truely loud or the vibration is causing a resonant frequency to reverberate through your entire setup. Pick the skimmer up with your hands to where its not touching anything and see if its still loud.

Fwiw that link says not avail in stores so it may not be the exact one but it looks like it. They had some that we're rigid and hard. Don't get those. The one I got is soft and very squishy. Can roll it into a ball or flex it away way you want

Build quality is great, got mine used from a member here. Look up some reviews, they are all fantastic.

Personally I would not support a criminal. Octopus, jns and vertex are skimmers I would reccomend
