Who is NOT running a sump/fuge

I havent ran a fuge or sump in my 46 gallon bow front that has benn running for about 1.5 years. Everything seems to be going great with the tank since I only keep one fish.

I run a small HOB filter with the biowheel taken out. I normally clean or change the filter on it about 1-2 times a week. I also only do a 5 gallon water change about once every 3-4 weeks. Keeping one fish keeps the bioload low.

how does the water test come out?

Also what kind of load do you have?

I did not run one when I first built it ... but soon after I upgraded to one.

Having done both I think the water condition stays more stable with one.

I don't have one because it would violate the rules of the contest... But I do have a canister filter.

What contest are you talking about?

I dont do water tests.

I have been using tap water also. I know most of you are shocked and probably cringed when you read that last part. I plan on using ro/di water once i set up my new tank.

I currently have one small six line wrasse. I also have several hermits and snails.

I also have LPS, shrooms, Frogspawn, candy canes, xenia, GSP, ricordea, and yumas that are all thriving and spreading like crazy. I have been seling off a lot of my coral lately to make more room.

I have a three gallon tank. It's my only reef at the moment. One of the rules is you cannot increase the volume any more than a total of 4.5 gallons. My canister holds exactly 1 gallon with nothing in it.

I don't have a sump on either of my tanks. I do have a hangon fuge on my 75gal with a small amount of cheato in it. I'm also horrible with water changes. I do a 10 to 15 gal water change every 6 months or so. Only down side is it is hard to run any kind of reactor.

I change 25% water weekly. The canister/sump :D has rock rubble, carbon, ceramic tubes, and Purigen in it.

I'd like to add a skimmer but I'm not sure how I'd do it. I think a Remora Nano would fit. I have a full size Remora but that won't work.

Hey.. maybe if I had a sump...

the reason I dont have a sump is because its a PITA to set up. I had a sump on my 55 gallon and my 125 gallon I used to have. Plus I do not like the overflows that have the "U" tube becuase i dont trust them. Once I buy a reef ready tank I will set up a sump and fuge. Till then its sumpless for me!

I do not run one on my 37 gallon tank and it has been fine for the past 4 years. I just run a cpr bak-pak with live rock rubble in it. I plan on switching that out for a cpr aquafuge PS this week to add a fuge for copepod, etc.

I like the idea of a hang on the back fuge/skimmer but I am thinking it cant be good to hang 30-35 pounds of water on the back of a small tank.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing, I plan on building a box or something to set the fuge on so the back of the tank does not take the full weight og the fuge.

I have ran several tanks refugium and sumpless. The only advantage to a overflow to me is that you don't get the skim build up on the top of the water in the display tank. Thats really the only benifit in my experience so far but that is always an ongoing learning curve :D

I don not run a Fuge just a sump. All I have in it is my skimmer and return pump. I ran a fuge on my last tank and I have always meant to turn this in to one but 2 years later I still have not accomplished it.

Well personally, I would do it separately. I know cpr and other companies have the skimmers built in now, but the problem I see there is, the skimmer is pulling nutrients out of the water before the macro get a chance to get some of it (kinda defeats the point). On the other hand, I doubt the skimmers are that great, but I don't have any personal experience there.

I originally set my 40g w/o a fuge, but ended up using a HOB fuge from cpr, the med size one (I believe its ~19").
I don't know how much the fuge helped or if the system just became more stable over time, but I tend to feed heavy, and noticed that even with a medium stock of coral, and 5 smaller fish, my nitrates are always 0. However, I do run a skimmer (aqua C remora), and do ~7-10g water change every other week.

To decrease the wt/pressure on the back glass of the tank, I just use extra support that I cut to fit the distance from the wall to the fuge (a small piece of dowel rods w/ rubber on the ends) to help support the tank.
