White spots, again

[Hi guys, well I can truly say I will Never~Ever put a fish into my tank without QT first.... this is driving me crazy!

I see a couple of spots on my Yellow Tang (when he slows down enough~no he is not rubbing, just fast and likes to hide in the back when I walk up to the tank) and on one of the O. Clowns. Hopefully I am freaking out again for no reason and they will go away as before on my Coral Beauty, however if it is a form of ich, what's next.....

Can I treat everything in the tank or are we talking QT for the fishies?

My current plan is to watch them for the next couple of days and if I start seeing more spots, start treatment....

Question, what's the best treatment? Keep in mind I do have coral......

Thanks for any advice.

[Hve you been feeding the with garlic laced food? If not I would get some liquid Kaolic garlic extract and start putting it on all of their food and letting it soak in before feeding.]

[I have been adding garlic, but not regularly. I'll start adding it daily!

What does the garlic do? Personally I love garlic and know that it keep vampires away, but what else, haha! ???]

[This is one of those things that no one seems to want to back up with any scientific data. But there have been too many reports form a large number of fish keepers that say it can help rid ich in minor cases. And may help prevent them from ever contracting ich. Since ich is a parasite along the same lines as a mosquito, (well somewhat) I would think it effects fish along the same lines as people whom eat a lot of garlic seem to omit some fragrance that deters mosquitos from biting them.
On a personal note I use it everytime I get a new fish for a period of at least two weeks, even without seeing any ich. And I have never had a case of ich show up in my reef tank fish. And I am talking about some rather highly prone fish. Now I shall bang my head on this wooden desk to make sure the ich gods hear me knocking on wood. (OUCH!)]

[In my investigation, I find that many folks will QT all new fish prior to insertion to their show tank. You never know what you get from the LFS, and for them ICH is a constant war. So I didn't know about the zoa garlic thing, and was wondering why people soaked their nori in that stuff prior to feedings. Learn something everyday I guess =)]

[Hey Rick, This does make sense. Several people have mentioned adding Garlic and I never thought to aks why!
So ~ Thank You!
I am sure that the "Ich Gods" heard you and will be kind!
Don't hurt yourself though! haha! :cool grin:]

[Cheryl,
You might try adding some cleaner shrimp to your display. They will clean your YT. My Hippo seems to enjoy the cleaning.
Also, if you can find them, Blue Neon Gobies a cleaner fish.
Definitely do the garlic thing!]

[Ok guys, If I need to do the QT(have a 10 gallon for that) and have a 45 gallon that I am getting ready for SeaHorses, so I could use that since it is almost ready. As for the fish, whew.... Here is the list:
Yellow Tang
6 Line Wrasse
Coral Beauty
Royal Gramma
Yellow Tail Damsel (I think that his name?)
2 - Green Chromis
2 - O Clowns
Also, 2 skunk shrimp (1 is missing right now, perhaps molting), 2 peppermint shrimp, crabs and snails.

To your point, the YT and Coral Beauty love their daily cleaning, funny to watch too!

So do you guys think I should go ahead and QT just in case or wait a couple of days? Is there a way to treat them where they are? Just curious so that I can make the right decision.....

Thanks for all the help!]

[That would depend to me on how badly the whole tank had ich and how hard it would be to catch them all. Also to put 9 fish into any tank is going to require one heck of a filter system for it to keep up with the bioload. Did you add nine fish to a new tank since November? Or has this tank been set up for a longer period of time? Remember patience, nothing good ever happens fast in a reef tank.]

[Yes, I don't want to admit it but they were all added over the last 3 months.... It's a long story, let's just say I had help.

Only 3 of the fish are from the LFS. Not that it makes much difference. I would like to take the damsel and 2 chromis out, however catching them is another story.
If I end up QTing them, then the number will be down to 6! Perhaps even 4 as the clowns are not really what I wanted either (that long story comes into play here, :p )

The moral of the story is that a QT tank is a must and patience is too!

So where to go from here!

This is not a full fledge outbreak at this point, so I will keep an eye on things and figure it out as I go, hummmm]

[I would get the liquid Kaolic garlic extract from GNC and start putting it on all of their food today. And keep feeding it to them even if it clears up for at least a month.]

[There are only a couple options here.

1) Feed garlic and hope they fight it off and get over it. It might work and is the easiest but this is more hope and prayer then anything.

2) Catch all the fish, QT, and treat. Run the main tank fishless for 6 weeks. This is the best option but obviously is much easier said then done! You will need a big tank and will have to do water changes at least twice a week and maybe more. This is the only thing that will truly "cure" the issue.

3) Catch the couple that are showing signs, QT, and treat. This in my opinion is not worth it. Ich is in the system so the minute they are reintroduced they will be reexposed. If it gets bad on a certain fish I might consider doing it just so that fish can survive!]

[Now I know I posted a question asking if there had been any scientific studies on the positive effects of garlic and the feeding of fish. Sure enough, Amanda replied with references and detail information. Now I just did a search on both garlic and my ID and can find nothing. Where did it go?]
