Which protein skimmer for under $600

I am wanting to upgrade my protein skimmer (currently running an asm g3..i know, i know). My Tank is a standard 210 mixed reef (med-heavy load) with a 50 gallon sump. I was considering the SRO XP 3000sss, SRO XP 5000 sss, and the SWC Xtreme 230 but now not sure what to get. anyone have experience with any of these and if its noisy or not? The quieter the better.

Thanks again

i have the xp 3000 ext on my 210 and it works great...i will say it is not the quietest of skimmers, but its not louder than my dart so its ok to me.

I love my XP2000SSS, so I'd recommend the Reef Octopus line any day. Seems as though the 5000 would be overkill, so I'd go with the 3000 out of the two. The only thing I do not like about the 3000 and 5000 is the exit pipe. Get on CoralVue's website and look at the difference in how the clean water exits from the skimmer. On the 2000, the water goes out the bottom of the pipe, but on the 3000/5000, the water goes out the side. This will cause a water trickling noise, so you'll have to make a simple mod to make it quiet. It's not hard to do, but you should know you will have to add some pipe to it to make it 100% quiet.

No experience with the SWC's.

I run vertex alpha cone 200. I love it really easy to dissemble and clean.

Sounds like score-boarding to me! Those skimmers are well over $600!"]

Is that the same as post padding. [smilie=rofl.gif] Seriously tho'......it is possible to pick one of these up used, for less than $600.

Thanks for the fast response guys!! So Ron, are you saying you want to sell me your skimmer for under $600? lol Im in. Your input was what I needed to hear.

I just left franks a few minutes ago and he is searching for me. Has anyone tried the new tropic Marin bio actif? I am almost out of salt and ran across this ... Is it hype or good stuff? I normally use tropic Marin pro and have had good success

The SRO 3000 SSS comes in 2 different body styles, the standard and the cone. Is the Cone shape worth $633 compared to the regular shaped one for $460? Both have the bubble blaster 3000 on it.

I also have the 2000 SSS. Best thing I have bought for my setup. Have had it 2 years now.

Thanks for all the feedback. I took the advise and bought the sro xp3000sss. It is huge but fits perfectly! I also purchased a skimmer stand with adjustable legs to help in finding the sweet spot for depth in my sump. Almost time to start adding more sps!!

I think the skimmer is suppose to be it 6 inches of water. At least that's what the tech support guy told me for my 2000 SSS

You won't be disappointed. It's a great skimmer. Start you water level off at 6 inches. Anything over 8 will cause a overflow depending on if you have a ato or how its set up. I find the min works great.

Unfortunately, my plumbing is going to prevent me from keeping it at 6".... Hope 6 3/4" - 7" water depth won't cause too many problems. Has anyone used tropic Marin bio actif salt? I picked up a bucket to test out. After that test, gonna test a bio pellet reactor.
