[hi - i hoping to purchase a purple tang within the next couple of weeks, a small one - do you guys have an recommendation on where i could go to find a healthy one and not pay twice the reasonable price?? thanks.

[EA - loses on price

Fish Gallery loses on health - they're fish can be very ify. I've had mixed results.

DNA loses on price

Online loses on health -

Hate to say it, but online and QT for a few weeks is your best bet. FG and QT maybe 2nd.]

[I was in DNA today to buy freshwater fish. From a distance I saw a small purple tang. I don't know how it looked or how much it cost.]

[Scott, at Saltwater Paradise has a couple of healthy looking purple tangs. I bought one from him about a month ago. I don't know if those are from that shipment, but mine is doing great.]

[I was in DNA also today. They had a good looking small one. I did a double take. I did not look at price.

Saltwater paradise sold one while I was in there today.]

[I bought a pair of watanabe angel from Saltwater Paradise last September when we had the meeting there. The fish are still doing well. You can always ask how long they have the fish, and if the fish are eating.]

[Todd, why would you not buy a heathly fish from EA seeing that price is the only problem. The price diffrence of a heathy fish over a iffy fish you have to QT and hope that it makes it? We as a club still needs to support our LFS stores more.]

[I was in Tranquil Scapes earlier this week and he had a couple small PT's that looked healthy. Prices weren't marked though.

[Mesquite - I didn't say I wouldn't buy from LFS - In fact, I do. But price was a concern. Good point Peter, but I've never been able to stop at one - so for ex. at Saltwaterfishes -they're 49.99 - free ship at $79.

For buying healthy fish absent price - I would recommend going to any of the good LFS' and asking them to feed the fish for you, ask how long its been there, make sure it's at least a week, and watch for scratching. I've often paid a premium for getting a healthy fish. But as I understood the post, Gmacy was wondering if you could get one without one. I haven't found that you reliably can do both - especially with tangs.]

[thanks everyone for chiming in- i agree with all of your points, from what i can tell, you can get a better price online - especially through a site like saltwaterfish.com, especially with the free shipping -- i have heard they can be reliable and the fish in good shape ...
for me, i think that i really like the idea of going to a respectable lfs and having them keep the fish for at least a week and make sure it is eating well and healthy. i believe this serves two purposes, it gives me a chance to observe the fish and make sure he is healthy, and additionally, it helps to reduce the overall stress on the fish - meaning, he has that 1-2 week window to recover from the shipping before being placed in the tank - might be a minor difference, but for me, it is worth the addt. $$

thanks --- here is a 2nd question ... the pt will be the first fish into the system, it would be wise to still put him in a quarantine tank correct?? thanks.]

[I have been wanting to order here for a long time
http://www.fishsupply.com/cgi-bin....00

They are the cheapest place I have found to order fish. However I have no experiance with them...

BTW saltwaterfish has a rep for overestimating fish size. You should subtract 25% from their listed size so you won be disappointed. I saw a guy on RC that got a damsel that literaly fit on a quarter with nothing hangin off.]

[Mitch -

I ordered two pairs of bellus angel and a Power Brown Tang from the fishsupply.com. While I too find their prices are the least expensive when compared to other online stores, their shippings are higher and there is no free shiping on large order. So I invited AP to pool this order to save on shipping.

From day 1, the male bellus angel refused to eat - and subsequently died weeks later, while the female bellus angel ate like a pig. AP's pair did very well for months. I think his female bellus died overnight for no reason a week ago. I suspect that AP had too many fishes in his tank - but we don't know for sure.

My powder brown tang and female bellus angel are both doing great. I did write an e-mail to fishsupply.com if they would give me a discount on future purchase since male bellus angel wasn't eating (also they only sell a pair for $199, there is no price for just the male fish). Prior to purchase, I was told that both pair ate well, and they had them for weeks. I never did get a response from fishsupply.com, so I am on the fence if I would order from them again, or recommend anyone to order their fish.

I would have purchased this pair locally - but I haven't found this type of angel available. One time I have seen Fish Gallery with female bellus angel but I was told that it a fish that they don't stock regularly.]
