Where is the DIY for LR mounted on the tank back wall

I've seen it here but i spent two hours searching with no luck .
the process was mounting small live rocks on the back wall of the tank with black foam of some sort (join the rocks together and fill gaps).

Any body knows. ??

Try this one on Reefcentral. It's got a lot of good information.

the black foam i used was the great stuff pond foam. then its simply a matter of ziptying some rock to eggcrate and putting foam around it.

i got the black foam ( found it in home depot pond sealent) but i would like to cover that black foam (in between the rocks) with some sand but the problem is that it dries quickly and i don't have the time to cover it right..

when i did it, i tried the sand thing and was able to just sprinkle it on after doing about a 1'x1' section with no issues. maybe trying a smaller area to see how that works for ya.

Here is a pic of my test piece. You can do heavier on the sand but I was just testing it out here. I actually chose to go no sand after playing around with it a bit and it's mostly purple now.

it looks good. i would add more small rocks and use the black foam to bond these small rocks together then cover the cracks (black in between) with sand.
i will do it for my in wall 120G and I hope it will look good.

i will also check and see if i can find "black" eggcrates rather the white one i have at home. also might swing by home depot to get some silicon (GE 1 doors/windows).

keep my fingers crossed.

i used the silicone and it has worked just fine. black egg crate you will probably have to order on line, i havnt seen it locally.

you can buy the white eggcrate and spraypaint it black with Krylon Fusion black spray paint. I did it for my first frag rack

HI If you are set on pond foam put epoxy on the foam and then sprinkle it with sand. That is the consensus on RC. I used white Portland and oyster shells on mine.

If you're going to cover the exposed foam with sand, let it dry first, then brush on epoxy and apply the sand to the epoxy. It sticks much better to the epoxy than the wet foam. In addition, you add one more layer of protection to the foam.

Read through the link I sent you above, it will show you which epoxy to use and everything.

When I did mine, I pinched off all the shiney surface off the foam (after it was dry) to get a more natural rock-like look. It also allowed the next layer to adhere better to the foam. I then used cement/sand/oystershell over that. Have to cure it because of the cement, but a thin layer doesn't take long to cure.

If you spray paint anything and put it in your tank the snails will eat it and I cannot imagine that would be good for them. Is this right?

Most paint is non-toxic once it dries. It's the chemicals that keep it wet and flowing that causes problems. People actually paint their rock purple to avoid the wait for coraline. Lol. I thought about it for my nano as I have an airbrush and could do some good "fades".
