When People want your fish/Coral for Free

Hi DFWMAS,

I was reading a thread today and it stated that I will come and get your fish but I dont have any money. Just something that responsible reefers should think about before giving your fish/coral to someone. That if they do not have any money to offer you for your fish or coral do they have the means to feed your fish or coral. Provide the correct lighting, water peramiters or additives to make sure that is has a happy life. I understand this is an expensive hobby and that now all of us are blessed to be able to afford 300G or exotic coral but we should reef with in our means. They may have a very nice home for your pet but just take the time to look into it and not let your fish get fliped upside down.

I have had to sell fish at certain times either because the fish was getting to big for the tank or just because I was leaving the hobby temporarily and I always made sure the fish was going to an experienced person and someone who had the means to take care of the fish.

yes i agree i am tight on money but always provide a well maintained habitat and don't sell to just anyone. the point of having coals besides liking them and the hobby is for in tank reproducing. and propagation. they grow and get fragged to help keep others from picking the ocean clean.

I disagree with you. My husband and I are both in school we don't have money to go blow on fish and corals. But we have a great set up with top of the line equipment. We also make our own food because it is much cheaper. Our fish are spoiled when it comes to food. We also saved up for a RODI unit and use aquavitro salt. So I can run my tank without spending any money for a year. So right now my bank account says BROKE but my fish are well taken care of.

Get off people's financial situations. Just because someones low on funds until their next check, doesn't give you the right to claim them an "unfit" host to a fish/coral! Are you aware that they could have a plethora of food/chemicals and what if they're broke because they just dropped a fortune a on new lighting system?! It could be none of these, fact of the matter, you have no place to judge other reefers and their setup unless you actually know what's going on.

Anyone who has been to my place knows they are in for a bit of a conversation. :)

If after a while I'm not hearing about solid plans, good build outs, fluency about water parameters, prior experience, then any of the more difficult stuff to raise is all stuck on grow out or not recommended.

If some Xenia ends up dead in a cycling tank, no big loss. Folks just starting out are given chaeo and not culpera. I also try not to do completely free. For some people, free means they feel no responsibility while even a small $5.00 investment means they are engaged and will make a good attempt.

I do what I can to help folks jump start. Live sand and 'fuge rubble is easy, especially for members current on their dues. $5.00 seems reasonable considering the price of gas these days.
I don't have much for free. Not even advice. You can get free advice at a LFS for what that's worth. [smilie=rofl.gif]

To be honest I am not sure what the coral Co-Op is. I love how when you’re a the sheep amongst the wolves that the frenzy begins. I believe the last 2 lines of my statements show that you may be able to just look into it.

Also thank you HeathD for helping show the people of the MAS what I am talking about with Mods. Why would you say that I guess alreadydead does not agree with the coral co-OP either. I am not sure what that is and you and I have not talked about it. You as a mod are trying to discredit me and take something that I assume that people like and make a statement saying I do not. I am not sure if you are doing this on your own or being forced to by the MODS but I do want to tell you HeathD that I do not like it. So please try not to speak for me in the future. I am not angry with you just a little upset that you would do that.

If a person shows up to pick something up that I'm selling and says they don't have money, they don't get the product. Period. End of story.

It's not my problem nor business to ensure they've got proper lights, good water, compatible livestock, etc. That may sound irresponsible and callous to some, but I think too many people in this hobby take their roles as Neptunes and Poseidons (policing the seas and aquariums) way too seriously.

I've given a lot of equipment, beginer coral, & macro algea away and I feel good doing it & I know it's helped others. Twice I have seen something I gave someone up for sale here. That makes me feel bad...but I got over it. I agree with Already Dead about giving or selling fish or coral to someone with out a clue to maintaining a safe enviroment for their livestock. I wouldn't part with the livestock in that case. I would advise the person why & attempt to help him understand what he/she needed to do to be able to keep their livestock healthy. This is an expensive & time consuming hobby. If a person can not afford to the cost of maintenance of a marine tank, it is not humane to add livestock that is going to die or suffer because of lack of proper maintenance. If that person can't afford salt that is a flashing light, No I won't sell or give you any LIVEstock.

I guess I'm lucky I got my caeto (not culpera) when I did! I don't believe a word of this post, when I see people needing help or CAETO, I always see Howard offering [smilie=rofl.gif]
