Whelks ?

Ok, I have had this lil guy in my tank for a few weeks.
I kept seeing him around, usually crawling on the rock and occasionally glass.

After Matt's presentation at the meeting, I think this might be a whelk.
I don't think its a nassarius, the shell is quit different.

Can anyone confirm this... thanks.
(sorry about the pic, that is the clearest I could get it)

If it had a tatooed pattern on it's trunk and body then it's a whelk. http://melevsreef.com/id/whats_a_whelk.html

Cheers,

Err.. many snails have a patterned trunk. That's one way to distinguish nassarius from whelks, given similar shape, but it's not definitive of whelks. Whelks have a more diamond shape in profile, while the one above has a rounded top. Looks like one of the euplica sp. snails that Serk has populated the metroplex with.

So should I put it back in Ashlar!?

Just some background, it accidentally came with a fish in a bag...

I'd put it back in. Put it in the sump if you want to wait on a better ID.

Was the fish from a member tank of someone that got macro from Serk or me?

Honestly, I'm not 100% certain, but it was from a LFS...

I know I've given some to a few LFSs, so it's possible :)

From the pic, it looks like the shell is fairly smooth. The pest whelks we get have serrations or bumps in rings the length of the shell. I think even Marc's pic show that.

I think Matt's presentation scared all of us and is making everyone take a closer look at all our pods, worms, and snails *grin*.

It's funny you mentioned that Matt...
when I first saw it, I thought it was a baby conch as well, but then after the presentation I thought I'd better double check... :)
