What's your salt?

There are not huge differences in the good salts.

Reef crystals mixes up nice and has never given me major batch to batch variance. It's also really chep when they run the sale at Dr fosters and smith.

You want the salt to mix close to the levels you desire so you don't have to spend time and money bringing them up to the levels you want.

I've heard good things abou tthe red sea but For many months we heard about the greatness of Oceanic and then thye had major issues.

Reef Crystals is a known commodity from a great company that gives me close to what I want everytime so why would I swtich?

Tropic Marin is good but $$$, HW is good but $$

There is no answer though to which salt is best!

I personally would not switch salts even if another brand like the Red Sea salt was considerably less money. It would take Reef Crystals totally changing. I don't like switching salts and don't think you should if things are doing fine in your tank. I even think it is fine to mix two salts together as long as you do it consistently.

Totally agree with this. Consistancy means everything and we strive so hard to keep things consistent so why would you want to switch it up? The price difference would have to be pretty big fo rme to switch and it would have to have a long proven track record and I would switch very slowly over several water changes if I was going to. Many have instantly switched with no issue but why? As they say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

red sea PRO , love the CA @ 450/460 out the bucket. And @ 36.99 @ planopets it's even better."]

Same here!"]

Me too! My tank tests at Ca 480 the day after water changes... <3

sea chem. thought about going to Red sea, but changed my mind.

Currently using Red Sea Pro but Reef Crystals is also good. The CA is higher with RSP but not by much. ALK is higher with RC again not by much. I was alternating each water change between RC and RSP but only for the last six months.

Looking at salts is like comparing Ford vs. Chevy.

I'm back to using Kent Sea Salt because I'm all out of Red Sea Pro. I have 5 buckets of Kent and three 200g boxes of Ocean Pure so I'll be using those up to get some space back in my garage.

kent sea salt is what i currently used to make up my 75g. Hopefully there hasn't been any change in opinions about their product or bad results from anyone using it. Last time I remember Kent was the hot thing after people started reporting problems with using Oceanic. It seems like every one switched to Red Sea pro. Was that mainly because of the price and local availability?

I used Kent several years ago then they had the problem with Alkalinity (too low) and I switched to Reef Crystals/Red Sea Pro. Kent should be fine now.

By the way the lesson learned is that you should test every batch of salt that you mix before using to one make sure that it matches the water in your tank for Temp, PH, Sp, Ca, Mg, & Alk. If testing every batch is too much, then you should at least test every bucket. Know what you are putting into your tank and you may have to buffer depending on what salt that you are using.
